I'm an effective altruist mainly reading and boosting posts, but occasionally I'll muse and doodle about #EffectiveAltruism. I take a balanced approach, so will highlight under-represented views—my opinions will no doubt become apparent :)
Congrats to @kyleflaw.com, Seoyeon Bae, Liane Young, and @stysyropoulos.bsky.social on their new article in Political Psychology. "Ideological differences in moral concern reflect circle expansion, not inversion" tests the claim that liberals prioritize strangers over their own communities. cont'd
Disinformation on Meta and TikTok falsely claimed that Spain's border was completely open, sparking a massive surge of up to 72,000 migrants rushing into the Spanish North African enclave of Ceuta. 70 people died.
Fact check: Did disinformation trigger the Ceuta crisis?

It's kind of a weird anomaly that this idea from moral philosophy ended up as an internet meme that normal people argue about. But it makes sense in it's original context, philosophers love thought experiments. The degree to which it is applicable to real life is... debatable.

i reject the premise that fantasizing about committing atrocities for the greater good is a productive way of doing moral philosophy i refuse to be dragooned into a false dilemma that makes a mockery of agency and treats human beings as ants
I really enjoyed @rutgerbregman.com’s book Moral Ambition which goes into this idea a fair bit
Some liberals have no principles/philosophy and use moral and strategic arguments to emotionally manipulate people in bad faith. They don't actually believe in a lesser evil; it's a shame tactic. Someone with principles would support Sawant because Smith is inside Trump's financial support network
War is sometimes moral. It depends on what it’s trying to accomplish. In this case we’re punishing Russian imperial ambition by aiding Ukraine. This is worthwhile.

you're like "effective altruism is trivial" and then you go see the way people talk about foreign aid
1) vote the Repub sycophants out of office in Nov 2) talk “politics” with others 3) help urge others to vote ONLY for Dems: mobilize.us …since SCOTUS & the Repub Congress is in Trump’s pocket There is NO effective oversight by those 2 branches of government as the Constitution normally mandates.

Objectivists are straight up black holes of selfishness and if you have any functional conscience you can struggle with it. Longtermism however assures you that you're operating on the scale of millions or billions of years and are stewarding human existence, making you a hero, not a psychopath.
