Freedom includes the autonomy to make bad decisions and be stupid. State prohibition on anything, whether it be guns, drugs, smoking, "misinformation," abortion, etc. is petty authoritarianism & only a fool would trust the government to make decisions for them.

The systematic erasure of smoking through bans, taxes, etc. is symptomatic of a larger spiritual sickness infecting modernity, namely the sterilization and mechanization of every part of life. I'm maybe like 15% joking.

Netanyahu is a vile, blood-soaked monster. But he is a symptom. The illness is Israel itself: inherently a genocidally violent, racist, settler-colonial project based on ethnic cleansing, imperialism, & white supremacy. Don't let Netanyahu be an alibi for Israel or Zionism.

New: Macklemore will donate entire $1M of his earnings from Ed Sheeran's tour to six orgs helping Palestinians — and invites Robert Kraft to match him. Says he wants to center Palestinians being killed + journalists & aid workers who keep going. "Their risk is of a far different order than mine."

With everything that has happened over the last 48 hours, I want to bring the conversation back to where it belongs: to the Palestinian people who are still being killed, still living under military occupation, and still fighting for their freedom.
I will be donating the entire $1 million of my net earnings from Ed Sheeran's Loop Tour to six organizations working directly to support the Palestinian people. And I invite Robert Kraft to match my donation. Whatever we disagree about, perhaps we can agree on this: Palestinian lives are worth protecting. A Palestinian life is no less valuable than any other life on this earth.
That is what this has always been about. Not me. Not a tour. Not the headlines or the controversy. It is about Palestinians right to freedom, dignity and safety in their own homeland. I want to center the parents carrying their children into hospitals without the basic resources to treat them, and the physicians, paramedics, journalists and aid workers who keep going back in. I want to center the organizers and activists who have paid real costs for standing with Palestine. Their risk is of a far different order than mine.
Just yesterday, 15 year old Muhammad al Zinati was killed in an Israeli strike while rushing to help aid worker Sherif Lubbad, who had already been injured. He was a child. Both were murdered. Both should be alive. And the ones still under the rubble, whose names exist only in the memories of people who may not have survived to speak them. Writing a check is one of the least costly forms of solidarity available to me. I am doing it because I can, and because these organizations are doing the work while much of the world debates it.
But aid alone cannot address the conditions that make it necessary. This is a manmade injustice, and I believe it requires immediate political change. Palestinians have lived for decades without basic rights and should not have to wait another day to be free. That is where my focus will remain. I will …

its actively harmful to the culture at large to insist that one should bonsai their preferences to within moral parameters. art is what makes us human, fucked up art is as much of that humanity as anything else. uniqueness of vision is what makes great art great, that cannot ever be substituted.

i actually think its fine to enjoy the art of someone you find repulsive, if (big if) you are actively engaging critically with the art, which you ought to be doing anyway. mishima could not have written mishima without being mishima. bad people make great art, it's important to acknowledge that.

You know, when you find out that the art you like is made by people you've learned hold views you find wholly repugnant, I don't think you need to disavow ever having enjoyed the art. It's okay to acknowledge you liked or loved that art, but are now putting it aside. That was then, this is now.

Incidentally, this idea of matter as ontologically primary to consciousness has taken on the character of a religious dogma in the modern world, due to principles that arise during the Scientific Revolution as useful tools running completely amok beyond all rationality & trying to devour philosophy.

Perception is the source of all knowledge. Existence has never been known without perception. The "hard problem of consciousness" only exists because of the assumption that matter, only ever appearing as an element of conscious experience, is ontologically primary and dualistically "produces" mind.

Every so-called mechanistic explanation of behavior & evolutionary biology relies implicitly on the existence of free will "Pain exists as an unpleasant sensation to disincentivize actions that are damaging to the organism" presumes the organism can choose to avoid or not avoid certain actions.

I’ve always hated Google Maps. I like MapQuest and use it most of the time even before this. It reminds me of the times when I used to have to print out directions for trips. I think we should rename the lake this btw…
