Congratulations, you’ve personally murdered a turtle and its entire extended family. For decades that’s been the deal. Plastic is your problem, your choices, your guilt. And look some of that’s fair. If there’s a better option, take it. Nobody needs a plastic fork engineered to outlive the Pyramids so you can eat a salad that lasts eight minutes. But this is the bit I reckon they’d rather you didn’t think about too fucking much. While we were being lectured about our recycling technique, global plastic production went from about 2 million tonnes a year in 1950 to over 500 million today. Doubled in the last 20 years. And the plan is more. Because plastic isn’t just plastic. It’s oil and gas wearing a different hat. As we peel the oil industry’s fingers off transport and energy, they need somewhere new to flog the stuff and petrochemicals are it. This is their new business model. You’re not just the customer, you’re now also the landfill. I tried to finish this up with a comedic punchline, but this isn’t really that funny. It’s inside us. Microplastics have turned up in human brain tissue, in testes, in breast milk. At what point did we all agree that was a fair trade for a convenient lid? So no, you can’t manufacture hundreds of millions of tonnes of the stuff, wrap our food in it, and then stand beside the recycling bin shaking your head at me. Responsibility runs both ways. Yes, we need to choose better when you can, but the companies making 500 million tonnes a year don’t get to call this a you problem. I’m pretty comfortable with plastic being in my car, I’d just prefer it wasn’t in me. See less

If you are an environmental ngo working on a non climate issue (eg biodiversity), you're pretty justified in thinking the permitting reform folks are throwing you under the bus. At the very least that permitting reform camp has yet to articulate its affirmative vision of eg the ESA or MBTA

So who "won" the Swedish election? Narratives after parliamentary elections are hard. The center right gained support but will lose power, and the Social Democrats lost support but will gain power. The radical right Sweden Democrats are the clear loser, losing support and power.
