For a while, folks have asked me about older psyc job market numbers, and how they might reflect the 2008 financial crisis. I've finally been able to put together some numbers to reflect that (below) though the raw estimates come with some important interpretational caveats 🧵👇

Where did this year's #psychjobs market end up? Thanks to an unusually high number late postings, not as bad as it was looking earlier in the year. Still, this is the smallest number of jobs posted since 2012, representing a 26% decline from last year (~2/3rds the size of the covid drop in 2020).

In 1989, five teenage boys were wrongfully convicted of the rape of a jogger in Central Park. Today marks 23 years since DNA evidence helped free Exonerated Five. Their legacy continues to resonate across media, government and policy reform. Read: https://bit.ly/491s1j7

14-16 year olds can now work overnight shifts in Florida, with 16 year olds being able to do so on school nights. Its hard to believe that parents would vote for a guy who strips away their children's education and puts them in full time work conditions.

BREAKING: Starting at 6 pm today and through tomorrow, the U.S. Department of Education offices and regional offices will be closed “for security reasons.” Multiple sources shared the email to employees — which doesn’t explain more. Do you have info? Let me + @jsmithrichards.bsky.social know.

During Occupy Wall Street in 2011, there was a grassroots campaign to #MoveYourMoney from big banks to credit unions. I heeded the call a few years later, in 2014, moving my money from a corporate bank to a credit union, with zero regrets. Today, I’m still a proud member of a credit union.

I highly recommend that people shift to a credit union or local bank if you have not already done so. Corporate banks are precisely corporations whose sole function purpose is to profit off of you. They do not exist to help you with anything whatsoever. Move your money.
