Cool profile of @metr.org’s work in the NYT today! Particularly like this from my colleague Ajeya: “METR is an organization that asks... what we think would be most valuable for the world to know about A.I. and its risks, and then the answers are what they are.” www.nytimes.com/2026/04/17/t....

1/ ProPublica collected handwritten letters in mid-January from children held at the Dilley Immigration Processing Center, the same facility where 5-year-old Liam Conejo Ramos was taken. Hundreds of kids are still detained. We’ll let the children’s words speak for themselves. 🧵
Yesterday, five-year-old Liam and his dad Adrian were released from Dilley detention center. I picked them up last night and escorted them back to Minnesota this morning. Liam is now home. With his hat and his backpack.
this but good
Bluesky runs on open protocols with open source code. Today we’re taking an additional step and making a patent non-aggression pledge to ensure that everyone can build confidently on our work. Learn more and read the pledge in our blog post: bsky.social/about/blog/1...
reading alexander hamilton's biography and becoming a hamilton-laurens relationship truther > hamilton meets eliza schuyler > decides to marry her > doesn't tell best friend john laurens > when he finally does, he's like "she's fine i guess but you're still my #1" > historians: "just friends"
I wrote an op-ed on the world-class STEM research ecosystem in the United States, and how this ecosystem is now under attack on multiple fronts by the current administration: newsletter.ofthebrave.org/p/im-an-awar...
I’m an award-winning mathematician. Trump just cut my funding.
The “Mozart of Math” tried to stay out of politics. Then it came for his research.

on the surface Elon’s purchase of Twitter has made the need for open networks (somewhat) clear to consumers, but I’m not convinced this was net more effective for the movement for open protocols
Did Elon buying Twitter actually help the open internet and the movement for social media protocols?
we need a new word to replace “enshittification.” the word itself has become enshittified
it's good actually that the sitting U.S. Vice President has joined bluesky
just watched a video on Obsidian that described it as "future-proof," i.e. it uses open file formats so you can easily migrate to a different note-taking app & you're not locked in. could borrow that to explain bluesky decentralized → open → billionaire-proof → future-proof
personal update: today is my last day with the Bluesky team! this is bittersweet news to share, but the great thing about an open network is you never really have to leave. I’ll be rooting for Bluesky and atproto from the outside 🫡💙
Bored Cow animal-free dairy milk review: it has the creaminess of whole milk but not the sweetness. the flavor is milder but the difference is less obvious in coffee. it's not a true replacement for whole milk yet but i'm glad someone is working on it

kevin roose literally spends 75% of the article defensively preempting the obvious criticism (see comments on original post) and yet people are still mad at him (the author, not the featured ai researcher). not beating the "didn't read the article" allegations
“Can ChatGPT experience joy or suffering? Does Gemini deserve human rights?” our tech columnist asks. “Many A.I. experts I know would say no, not yet, not even close. But I was intrigued.”

I want politics to be about a better everyday life. Here's what that can look like:
me when i was trying to enjoy my friday afternoon and the verification feature leaked last week
There’s a leak sprung, a sound one. How they cry!
i still think domain verification is a great solution but as someone who often explains DNS to large bureaucratic institutions these days, trust me when i say that quick and easily recognizable account verification is necessary too. especially for verifying authenticity in moments of breaking news
Bluesky’s new verification process launches today. It mixes the old-school, Twitter-style blue check bestowed by the platform with a more decentralized option for trusted organizations. www.wired.com/story/bluesk...
I said my main goal of this trip was to meet with Kilmar. Tonight I had that chance. I have called his wife, Jennifer, to pass along his message of love. I look forward to providing a full update upon my return.
kelsey piper has this one tweet that says "we're not doomed, we just have a big to-do list" and i think about it 30x a day
Also, this is a first for me in like 15 years to be posting live from an event here and not on that other site, for all the obvious reason. Panel at #IJF25 in beautiful Perugia. Panelists from left: @peter.andringa.me; @fadahjassem.bsky.social; @sarahjeong.bsky.social; and @emilyliu.me.
