I’m a historian of the American South who likes to study work and nature. Author of Tampa Bay: The Story of an Estuary and Its People (University Press of Florida)

Just saw an excellent show with the Violent Femmes and the Tallahassee Orchestra at the Word of South Festival. I have to say, though, some of Gen X men suck at concerts. Just talk, talk, talk. Shut up already.

if you find yourself reluctant to support the guy at Columbia because you find some of the politics he espoused distasteful or even abhorrent, you should know that this is exactly the reaction that they hoped for in choosing him as a target for unlawful detention based on political speech.

Some in Florida are floating the idea of getting rid of property taxes, the main source of revenue for localities. I’m no fan of high taxes, but I think we need some slogans explaining why these are needed. I’ll start. Property Taxes: Because garden hoses aren’t good for fighting fires.

I would trust all the promises of AI more if the Facebook account for my book didn’t get the same spam message every day. Seriously, you guys can’t even develop a workable spam blocker for the exact same email? I report it every time.

This is happening, right now. The great "arribada" (arrival) of mother Olive Ridley sea turtles on the Odisha coast, where they dig sand-nests & lay their eggs, driven by ancient instinct. Heart-lifting, magnificent, moving: part of a geography of hope. 🎞️ by Bivash Pandav via my friend Yuvan Aves.

I don’t want AI to ever write my grad students’ theses, but I wouldn’t complain if there was a tool to do the title and signature page formatting the grad college is so picky about.

This Day in Labor History: February 16, 1931. The Harlan County Coal Operators’ Association reduced wages for miners in that part of eastern Kentucky by 10 percent. In response, the United Mine Workers of America attempted to organize the miners. This started the Harlan County Coal War for 8 years!
