A #Roman helmet with a face mask found in Pfrondorf. It's decorated with wings and snakes, a reference to Medusa, the snake-haired mythical creature whose sight turned everyone who saw it to stone. Medusa’s head was a popular motif used to ward off any evil. 🧵1/2 📷 Landesmuseum Württemberg

Interestingly, the prevalence of inlay (including silver, brass, copper, & enamel) on both daggers and their scabbards indicates this was not restricted to officers' weapons. Even auxiliaries used their decorated weaponry for collateral on loans (P. Vindob. L135: papyri.info/current/1627... ).

The pugio was the everyday sidearm every Roman soldier wore beside his gladius — usually plain iron, so an inlaid example is likely an officer's piece. Fitting that it surfaced in Graubünden: right in the path of Augustus's Alpine campaigns of 15 BC, exactly when this dagger was made.

This #Roman pugio (dagger) decorated with inlays (silver and brass) was discovered in 2019 in Crap Ses, Switzerland with other military equipment. So far, only four examples of this type are known. Dating 2nd half of the 1st c. BC. 📷️Amt für Kultur/Archäolog. Dienst Graubünden 🏺#archaeology

The hilt features decorative inlays of silver ivy leave shapes running down its center, with a crossguard decorated by a faint repeating Greek key-pattern design. The dagger’s surface is rough due to his age but its ornate details remain visible.

This is a rather delightful Niederbieber-typ helmet cheek piece with incised decoration. It bears a figure of Mars wielding a spear, with the cheek pieces on his helmet flipped up (a common trope) ... but wait, what's that hovering next to his left shoulder? Is it a crested Niederbieber helmet!?

The iron base of a #Roman helmet facemask, from the Romano-German battlefield at Kalkriese (Germany) - site of a Roman defeat, probably the AD Varus Disaster. It originally had a silver top layer which was stripped off during looting - giving it a particularly haunting look... #AncientBlueSky

I've spent a few years wondering what kind of helmets are meant to be depicted on the reliefs at Side, Turkey. I thought it could be a Montefortino with a volute, but after seeing this helmet from the Hermitage, I wonder if it might be it (no. RP-13085).
