Grumpy Black crone who likes to think and explore (and seek mindfulness, within reason). In pfp: a hedgehog with a kente kufi on its head, and red laser eyes. Not chill. “Coward American” — an opp. The aging, unsociable 🦔 rescue watches over me now. 🪽

Bicycles! Bicycles have gotten insanely better in the last 40 years, light weight materials, fashionable designs, so many form factors, so many avenues for fun and fitness while also varying levels of affordability and accessibility for all physical abilities. I love bikes (fuck cars tho 😅)

Food, man. Food is so much better than it was in 1986. All of it. Poor-people food, restaurant food, fresh food, frozen food. Food is just a hell of a lot better.

air travel is one of those experiences that has gotten monotonically worse over my entire lifetime

question though: has *anything* in the last 40+ years genuinely gotten *better*?

like, there's *more* stuff, sure, but is any of it *better*?

“No single figure proves the case on its own. But category after category, the products and services that rely most on immigrant labor are the ones pulling away from the rest of the economy. That’s a cost with a cause, not a coincidence,” the report says.”

Yerrrrrr! People of the internet, I’m tryna help a domestic violence survivor keep her car. She’s behind on her weekly payment fee. $258.66 has to be paid before midnight or they’re gonna come repossess her shit. Screenshots for proof incoming. Keeping this anonymous so she can stay safe.

Getting real sick of slop midwives pleading for a 'respectful discussion' of AI as relates to the arts. Your use of AI to 'make art' is not respectful. It benefits from stolen art, destroys the planet, and does not make you an artist any more than someone driving 26.2 miles is a marathoner.

Air quality. I grew up in the Los Angeles basin in the 70s and 80s and remember having to stay inside because the smog was so bad - Stage 2 smog alerts, they were called. Apparently they haven't had one of those since 1988. Haven't had a stage one smog alert since 2003.

yesterday I made a thread about how my friend who has cerebral palsy, walked with her service dog to her polling location to find out it's changed & how both locations are technically inaccesible. today I made a thread about how Detroit voted. these things are related. it's bigger than 'hmmmm.'

Today's reminder that the current genAI boom is powered by GPUs manufactured with a mineral called coltan (and other rare earths, and cobalt) mined through the labor of enslaved children in Congo, and the US and UAE fund the paramilitaries which protect those mines and keep those children enslaved.

Maybe it’s also studying neurodegeneration and mechanisms of cellular death in my terminal degree (while TAing neuroanatomy in a morgue) but my view of death is a mix of morbid interest in its mechanisms, some detachment, and a hope that it’s over quickly.

The last time death scared me, I was a child. After learning what I went through in the NICU, and after some diagnoses I’ve had throughout adulthood, I stare at the Reaper like this:
