A very good point as usual from @jamesbowes01.bsky.social The main objective of Mahmood's proposals was always to kick out care workers (as she has more or less said). That was always an economically, politically and morally bankrupt policy. Without it, the whole package falls apart.

Just exempting care workers would be ridiculous. Basically it would be a case of designing a policy to kick out care workers, panicking when you realise how stupid an idea that is, and then kicking out a load of engineers, scientists etc out of sheer stubbornness.

For me, this is the precise moment Starmer's fortunes started their irrecoverable downward spiral.
I don't feel sorry for Starmer. I feel for the Palestinians whose slaughter he enabled, for the trans people and refugees he's victimised, and my colleagues who've had their careers wrecked by Labour's assault on universities. A record to be ashamed of.
One way I feel I'm in a bubble is I feel like this point is *very* well appreciated in my circles, and it seems (apparently misleadingly!) to me that my circles should have some overlap with centre-left technocrat types, and yet it seems to make no difference at all to social democratic politicians.

If Labour does not understand its electorate, there is no way to appeal to it.
A massive shift is taking place here. Well-organised far-right terrorism is being treated as ordinary criminality, while conscience-driven protests against genocide are treated as terrorism. A highly conservative (and deeply weird and fantastical) Court of Appeal ruling embeds this shift.
This alone should discredit the Blue Labour "strategy".
