part of why this will be hard to internalize is because it sucks. yes, there was always a good amount of fiction and hypocrisy behind the idea that politics was something other than what ive described but hypocrisy is the tribute vice pays to virtue. deciding how to govern > deciding who should rule

Something I think those of us who grew up in 90s or earlier are going to have to internalize — and will always struggle to remember — is that US voters no longer accept the fiction that politics is a contest between liberal and conservative ideas, rather than faction-based culture war by other means

I don't think this is true; the film isn't trying to present a detailed analysis of Ancient Greek customary and religious law, it's building a moral universe that is comprehensible to modern audiences, which has some overlap but also diverges in pretty important ways.

Kind of interesting that we're seeing the return of pantheist politico-religious sects, kind of like in the english revolutionary period around 1650.
I do rather wish we could have had some more robust journalism in the topic BEFORE the every crank toilet monitor in the country were legally empowered, but alas

FWIW I don't think 'the academy' as a whole is having this kind of reaction, but EW's 'I hope this will help save the humanities' in this specific context is a perfect illustration of why it absolutely will not.
Robert Borden Stan Account@bordenstan.bsky.social · yesterdayIf the academy gets pulled into coming out swinging against the biggest adaptation of Homer in probably a couple generations off the back of one prominent scholar deciding to be Reviewer 2 to Nolan's work, it will say, IMO, pretty damning things about academia's ability to foster public engagement.
Worth noting that these guys getting into power with an effective majority would be a generational disaster.

This is worth amplifying (also this podcast is rad), that Roman slavery was, y'know, slavery. In fact, all slavery is horrifying, but the broader 'Mediterranean' slavery tradition (which is also, by the by, the ancestor of Atlantic slavery) is one of the *more extreme* such traditions.
