i think a lot of people are under the assumption Zainab makes a ton of money from sb, maybe because they can’t imagine running costs. High traffic sites + data transfers that exceed bandwidth incur extra costs. Not telling anyone how to feel but man

It sucks cos i’ve seen some people online extrapolate out to “this is a scam” which is weird to do. i’ve always enjoyed the fair, never made anywhere near the money some ppl do, for me it’s just a fun excuse to make something new and talk to new ppl. That’s all ❤️

Addendum to add i also think ppl feel a bit more like, one person is accessible to their complaints than a whole org which spurs some of this. Also muddies personal/prof feelings, I see people going “finally, I get to air my personal slight” (which I have seen happen to Zainab lots and it blows)

I've been reading the thread that went around yesterday and I didn't know if i wanted to speak up but actually I do. Using words like "mistreatment" and "abuse" when the whole situation boils down to "I asked for special treatment and didn't get it" ...are we serious ?

I've been a professional artist for more than 10 years, I've seen mistreatment and abuse and you not following the rules and getting your comic pulled out of the fair is not that. It's just the consequences of your own actions.

I've participated in the fair once and being in it truly shows you how much work goes into it. The guidelines are clear, the emails and reminders of deadlines are consistent. It's professional and well done all the way through.

I think it's really important to remember the fair is not mandatory? You don't have to participate in Shortbox Comics Fair if it's not a good fit. One of the first guidelines of the fair is "complete comics". If you don't wanna do a complete comic, that's ok but then maybe the fair is not for you ?

I've been friends with Zainab for more than 10 years, I've seen her say one day, in the middle of COVID "I miss comic fairs, wouldn't that be nice if there was a fair but online?" and move mountain after mountain running it since. Many of you can't even imagine the work that represents.

The emails, the 150+ people asking questions about things written in the guidebook she spent months writing. The people online speculating about how much money you make (not fucking enough). I don't know how she does it, I would have quit after exposing all the whining overflowing my inbox.

So if you're thinking about applying to the fair next year, look towards the hundreds of artists who had a great experience, read the rules, and decide for yourself.

One of the major points we make is that inclusion of disabled people in planning for adaptation (or mitigation and emergency response) won't lead to better policy without a responsive state. Without a commitment to build & fund what is needed it can be nothing more than cynical tokenism.
