Everything repeats over and over again. No one learns anything, 'cause no one lives long enough to see the pattern, I guess.
Aiming for the trash with a balled up piece of paper. Accidentally hits the reader.
Jack only grins down at her, masking the nagging worry he supposedly has no reason for. "I shall take full advantage of you being too tired to argue back." The hallways look different back here. Sort of dim and narrow, like they don't want to be found. Jack can't decide whether it's cosy +
They're getting closer. She can feel it. She's more than a little surprised that the TARDIS is letting him get this close, proves that she trusts him. She forces her eyes open and looks up at him, raising an eyebrow. She's going for an unimpressed look, but... the sleepiness kind of undercuts that.
That grin is so /familiar/, it stabs Jack with a little dagger of nostalgia. "2026, if you can believe it," he says, shoving his hands in his coat pockets. "Still deep in the 'gets worse before it gets better' era. —You stopping by to refuel?" Why else would one come to /Cardiff/?
[.... Oh, he can't resist. A big old grin spreads out on the Doctor's face.] Good to see you too, Captain. Still. World keeps marching on, like it should. What year is this now?
"But being me means wanting to check in on the people I care about. Ah-hah. Checkmate." These hallways are /very/ long. Jack's already glancing at the ceiling, wondering if the ship will ever let him arrive anywhere. This seems to be a room that never changes places. Interesting.
"The point of you is... just to be you." There's a lot of irony to her saying that. But she sees herself very differently to everyone else around her, so she can't really appreciate that. She knows that she doesn't want him to worry, though.
Jack smiles down at her, shifting his hold a bit to keep her comfortable as he continues walking. "Then what's the point of me?" From what he gathers, she's learned to be self-sufficient to a fault. So even if he doesn't /have/ to worry, he's still gonna fuss a bit.
Valerie's hand went up to gently squeeze his arm. She hopes it's a reassuring pressure. It's hard to judge when she's this exhausted. "I'm sure." She promises. "You don't have to worry about me."
"You sure?" Jack bites his tongue almost as soon as he asks it. On the one hand, constantly second-guessing others is a habit he's trying to unlearn. On the other— he really wants her to be /sure/, not just say stuff for his sake. Especially when she's sleepily burrowing into his chest and +
Valerie's bedroom is a pretty long way away, buried deep in the hallways. Safely hidden; nobody would stumble on it accidentally while she's at her most vulnerable. But the TARDIS is guiding him along. So he'll be able to find it. "Oh, that... happens sometimes. It'll pass."
Much too warm, enough for him to feel the raised temperature through his shirt, and Jack sports a concerned little frown when he notices. "I think you're running a fever. Are you getting sick on my watch?" He's just going to trust the TARDIS to lead him where he needs to go.
She squeaks when she's picked up, but then she curls close to him and lets her head lean on him instead. She's warm to the touch. Very warm. /Too/ warm. "Okay." She mumbles. She has half of a mind to ask 'to where,' but she doesn't bother.
"....You really don't, huh." Jack strokes her hair, then rests his hand on the back of her head to cradle it, encouraged by the way she leans into his touch. "C'mon. I'm gonna relocate you." He makes sure she's comfortably wrapped in the blanket, then scoops her up without further ado.
Valerie looks genuinely confused by his question. Her eyebrows furrow, she tilts her head... "I don't know." She admits, after a very long pause.
"Are you just saying that because you're too tired to get back up?" He's crouching, comfortably, but also poised to —for example— pick up a sleepy timelord and carry her to bed.
She subtly leans towards his touch, her eyes drooping closed again. She giggles a little at his words, shaking her head. "I'm pretty comfy here, though."
Aw, look at you, not being rude. And that heavily depends on what you count as peaceful. World hasn't ended yet, though, so that's something. [A break, and he smiles.] Good to see you, Doctor.
Well, I didn't want to say so. Nice and peaceful since we spoke last?
"Just me. —There are comfier places to fall asleep, you know," he says softly, tucking a strand of her hair back behind her ear. "Like a bed?"
She snuggles into the blanket first. Then, her eyes half-open. She goes to lift her head, but it feels too heavy so she lays it back down. "Mm?"
i don't understand. i can't ever find it. not the right answer. not what normal is. the world is so very, very far away. it's in a place where i can't reach.
/Is/ it? ... on second thought, I'm probably not the guy to take life advice from.
Ah, worth a try.

Hello! Sorry to just drop in like this. My name's the Doctor.
The truth is, I wanna be happier. More than you could ever know.
