The Gyökeres debate is so exhausting, because a lot of the issues he has - his touch, his heading, his movement - aren’t going to significantly change at 27yo in his prime and are directly related to his biggest struggles - hold up and shot generation.

Presuming the lineup means Mario central and Foord left, which could also mean Fox perhaps pushing higher on the right to get Mead inside where she does her best work.

Some really good vibes on this weeks episode, some Renée chat, some transfer chat, some game chat, some Chelsea chat, lots of grinning during the recording.

If anybody wants to pass time until the Arsenal game kicks off, we spent a chunk of this pod discussing the pros & cons of choosing to build attacks wide (a lot of the things Carra touched on in MNF) plus some discussion of the Villa game.

Martin Odegaard & Declan Rice standing over a free kick

Choosing to believe the Šeško news because that profile is so valuable in a team that lacks shot takers and ball strikers. (We’re still short a wide player in that case though)

Not really enthusiastic about the performance but such a needed result. The last few weeks/months have had a weird feeling about them - heightened expectations, reservations about trajectory and turgid football will do that - so it’s really nice to just win against that lot.

Genuinely curious how we set up today. Rice presumably comes back, as an 8 or 6? If 8, who’s plays deep -> both options not particularly fantastic vs. Sp*rs transitions. Attack probably Sterling, Havertz & Nelli - Not overly enthusiastic about a RHS with Rice & Nelli. Dreading it all a bit.

Outside of the very annoying Calafiori news, this is among our most balanced lineups of the season. Very happy with Jorge/MLS deep, Jesus wide with Havertz up front aided by Merino as a secondary box threat. Let’s see how it plays out.

It’s hard to talk about the Arsenal at the moment given all the asterisks attacked to the season - so we’ve tried our best to put the season in its context, make our long-term concerns, highlight squad building issues as well as singling out what the club simply can’t control.
