evolutionary ecologist trying to understand flowers and my teenager | occasional fireweed spotter | 🇨🇦 / 🇸🇪 | enjoying sabbatical | I should be writing
I am not certain, but I think this might be the greatest thread (and greatest use of alt text) of all time.
I've decided to compile a definitive thread of photos of the best sheep I've photographed during my walks in the countryside, together with supporting biographical information. I will put the vital story associated with each sheep in the alt text, since some of it is a little long to fit in a post.
A 2019 paper that is often used as evidence of the flawed 'windscreen phenomenon' has been retracted. I cited this paper a few years ago in explainers about why this particular anecdote cannot be used as evidence of insect decline. See thread below 👇 retractionwatch.com/2026/06/23/a...

Clarivate released the 2026 JCR yesterday. We are thrilled that, from a standing start, JPE's first-ever Impact Factor is 1.8! An outstanding result for the journal and a testament to the high-quality contributions of our authors, reviewers and editors. Carolin and Maria Clara JPE Senior Editors

Hive mind request. I’m looking for long term insect (ideally pollinator) monitoring schemes that have conducted weekly/monthly transects/counts for several years. I know of the Bee walks, UKMS, and PoMs in the UK. I would love some non-UK examples! 🐝🦋🐝🦋🐝🦋

New publication @thermal-biology.bsky.social! We show that non-invasive thermal cameras can measure thoracic temperatures in wild bees in the field. New tool to ID potential heat stress under #climatechange. Congrats to undergrad Mei McFeely on publishing her thesis #microclimate #pollinators 🐝🎉🌻
🐝Check out this new study demonstrating how infrared thermography can be used as a non-invasive method for measuring the thoracic temperature of wild bumblebees and showing how body temperature relates to ambient air and floral surface temperatures.🌻 @inlewis.bsky.social 📖 doi.org/10.1016/j.jt...
I just said no to an opportunity because it would mean travel to the USA and I'm very sad. I also recognize my privilege in being able to do so (tenured, etc) but I'm just so sad about.... gestures widely

Happy birthday, Chuck. Proud to carry on your legacy of studying evolutionary biology while going through it
In 2018, Ilja Van Braeckel created a font based on Charles Darwin's handwriting for #DarwinDay. It was based on 12,000 pictures of Darwin's original manuscripts! Link rot happened, and the original files are missing. I have put it up again here: drive.google.com/file/d/14Kcn... Happy Darwin Day!
As someone who has spent a career measuring flowers, I'm curious to see how they compare to these protocols
Finally, standardised protocols for measuring reproductive plant traits! This handbook covers 58 traits across flowers, fruits, seeds & seedlings. Designed for global applicability across diverse ecosystems and enables large-scale research 🌼 📖 buff.ly/TcagpiT

Looking for something new to integrate into an #evolution or #microbiology course? Useful for lectures, labs, homework? Have a look at our STEPS program, which simulates bacterial evolution, including the #LTEE. Easy web-based interface & lab manual w/ exercises to help develop students' intuition.
Excited to share new #program, STEPS, which can simulate #dynamics of the E. coli Long-Term Evolution Experiment (#LTEE) or other microbes in serial transfer regime. telliamedrevisited.wordpress.com/2025/08/12/s... STEPS developed by @devinmlake.bsky.social, Zachary Matson, Minako Izutsu, and me.
A resurrection study of scarlet monkeyflower populations across the species' range finds relatively little adaptive response to a seven-year drought event, showing that evolutionary rescue is not as predictable as we might hope 🌿 buff.ly/L8o4hhr

Great RadioLab interview with Ella al-Shamahi, about her journey from religious anti-evolutionism into evolutionary biology. New perspective but also familiar if you (like me) grew up among Christian creationists; really moving on what faith, even "denialist" faith, means to people
