You can take the Brit out of the UK but not the tea out of the Brit 🇬🇧🇫🇷🇩🇪🏴 speaker living in SW France Interested in 🚲 and active transport, politics, podcasts, 🐈🐈⬛ and fibre arts
One of the things I find odd about UK skills and jobs policies over the last 10 years is the idea that - for young people - place is destiny. It's like we've taken the Brexit memo and double stamped it into meaning you need to stay put to be a success. The geographical footprint of the UK is *tiny*
For those of us following the Le Porget/Saumos/Bordeaux fire carefully, this is a nice site with some good visuals to add to feux de forêt and the NASA one. suivi-feu-medoc.netlify.app?i=swir&w=48

Finally a bit of rain up here in the Point de Grave. I hope that they got a bit of it further south
It's not niche. It affects thousands of people. If you're one of them, have your say. And if you're not affected (yet), share this with people who are.
The DWP are asking for people to contribute evidence for a forthcoming review of Carers Allowance and how it operates. Admittedly this is niche, but please spread the word so it reaches the right people. www.gov.uk/government/c...

Carer's Allowance: call for evidence

What, and I say this advisedly, the fuck was she thinking???
"If more than one in ten passengers would need assistance to be able to access air travel, then it’s time to change the design of what happens on the ground." To my shame I had never thought about it in that way, just cursed my lack of training preparation for running between terminals in FRA.
To bring home the award in our core category, against stiff competition, in our first year, on a topic both @garius.bsky.social and I think is so important to cover… this one means a whole lot.
And "Cooee im home, how was it?" when you get home
Shoutout to everyone who gives their cat a little goodbye speech before leaving the house.
My all-time favourite tennis stat is that 50% of Roger Federer is 'er'. Respect to whoever first came up with that.
Oh wow. I wonder if I read this at some point as I had recurring dreams all through childhood about running through a dark wood, trees dead either side and everything just rolling towards me as I ran on endlessly. Exactly like this in fact.
Even now, this image of Cinderella - the spell broken, rushing to get home before her sisters, - is how I picture ‘anxiety’ Artist: Eric Winter
And then we had to wear bright red gym knickers without gym skirts (only for 6th form) for sports 🙄
SO many boomer & Gen X/elder millennial brits (me included!) have tales about their school demanding skirts for all girls and having adults measure the amount of thigh that was visible on specific, singled out 11-16yo girls
Totally irrelevant to the travel topic but the sncf app being called "Ma Gare SNCF" is a great example of the French app trend of calling all their apps my/mon/ma/... I've got 9 on my phone at the moment, from savings, to healthcare, to shopping. JUST CALL YOUR APP BY THE NAME OF THE THING IT IS

Alt: Gif of the anger character from that film I've forgotten the name of. He's angry and his head erupts in flames.

Being frugal for my trip starting tomorrow 😀 Only 30 rail apps on my phone! #CrossBorderRail
If like me you love the @ppfideas.bsky.social pod & often find its ideas a little challenging at first listen, this thread is an excellent breakdown of the episodes "The Future". An exceptional discussion & the final analysis of the impact of demographics was mind opening.
What if "the future" doesn't have a future? [And neither does the apocalypse] Epic, mind-blowing, troubling @ppfideas.bsky.social conversation between David Runciman and Ivan Krastev. 🧵 Idea 1: The end of the world used to be more egalitarian. Cue nostalgia for universal Armageddon.
I know this is probably fake but if the story is the cherry the thread is a delicious fruit cake full of plump raisins. TEAM LARRY

Since the next heatwave is coming, and my children (and maybe yours too) ask, "why do you always say drink before you get thirsty," you can show them this thread and nourish their nightmares.
If you're here in Europe right now, squashed under this merciless heat dome, you're probably pouring with sweat. That means you're losing water like a burst dam, & need to drink more water than usual to replace it. What happens if you DON'T do that? It's absolutely bloody terrifying. 1/
A reminder for Sunday, that although the final is on Sky, it is available to free to air on Sky Mix, as well as the Sky Sports app without a subscription. Should you so wish, Sky will also make Hindi commentary available 🤭 🏏 #T20WorldCup
Hello #frenchsky I will be in #Paris Clichy this afternoon for an appointment with a couple of hours to kill before heading back to Orly. Any suggestions of things to do? I'll be with my 15yo. Merci!
Plus this is grist to the mil for far right headbangers in EU to continue with their anti migrant rhetoric too. Those of us without dual nationality will find ourselves with families split up.
NEW: EU nationals in the UK are increasingly alarmed at Reform UK’s plan to target their rights to accommodation and employment, saying this is a betrayal of promises made in the Brexit referendum 10 years ago. www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2026...
Puy de Fou - I'm aware of the politics of visiting, it wasn't my choice, family members made the decision for our reunion location. That said, anyone here been to the Puy de Fou (in France) and have any tips for making the most of a visit? Happy to debate but mostly want tips! #puydefou
Finally got around to watching High Noon after listening to @ppfideas.bsky.social analysis a while ago. Great film, understanding greatly enhanced by having had David R's analysis, will go back now to relisten to find out what I missed!
This is cool/terrifying
This free fabulous interactive tool is both fascinating and essential. You can click on any location in the world and see its average weather and how it's changed over time. The data shown is from where I grew up & the heating is obvious. Do share! era-explorer.climate.copernicus.eu?lat=50.86&ln...
Ooof, this is really bad and their lackadaisical response is even worse
It looks like W Identity, the part of @wsocial.eu that checks your papers before you go in, has a very basic XSS on its admin backend, found hours after launch. This seems almost too predictable... Cyberfriends, any thoughts on how bad? 23.social/@kantorkel/1...
Truly amazing. I had positive result to a smear test in my twenties and a small procedure to remove some cells. I'm lucky that the result was only a need for yearly smears. Now generations are protected from cervical and also the rarer hpv linked cancers, it's really wonderful.
Amazing news! Cervical cancer deaths in younger women have plummeted in England following the rollout of the HPV vaccine, according to new research, published today in The Lancet. Read more: cruk.ink/4ozraO5
Even late adolescence. Son 15 is going to Canada for a study year in Aug (16 in Nov). Recent prep day in Paris, parents not invited. He travelled up alone (by plane) and discovered every single other 'kid' brought by parents, who then wanted to participate. Annoyingly, org agreed.
I'm sorry but I am just regularly very disturbed by how some adults talk about young people over the age of 16. (Or as they are in fact better known 'other adults'.)
