At a Historic Conference, Frontline Groups Push for a Just Transition

Though the First Conference on Transitioning away from Fossil Fuels is a historic achievement, movement organizers question if it will create needed pathways toward a just transition.

See our piece on the fossil fuel phaseout Santa Marta conference in Santa Marta. Social movements have converged around the demand to phaseout fossil fuels through a just transition that brings about systemic change and avoids false solutions to climate change.

I spent two summers here doing research on inequalities in government responses to disasters, focused on what had taken place in Puerto Rico following hurricane Maria. NCAR has led on so many scientific advances. This admin’s harm to the scientific workforce in the US is beyond measure.

Exclusive: The Trump administration is moving to dismantle the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Colorado, according to a senior White House official, taking aim at one of the world's leading climate research labs.

Seems like a deep red state, Indiana, might vote down the Trump-mandated partisan gerrymander, even after Trump threatened to pull all federal funding. Trump is creating a shared grievance that crosses the ideological spectrum, and his coalition keeps showing cracks.

The labor & persistent demands of grassroots groups made possible the #justtranstion mechanism at #COP30, providing a crucial UNFCCC institutional home for moving toward a just transition! "Despite Cop28’s global stocktake calling on all nations to contribute to “transitioning away from fossil fuels”, collectively there are still plans to produce more than double the amount of fossil fuels in 2030 than is consistent with ... 1.5C." www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

Puerto Rico’s federally appointed and unelected fiscal oversight board chose to pay its consultants while imposing austerity measures and denying any relief to families who will face the consequences of the loss of SNAP benefits.

With recent headlines and op-eps stunned by the pervasive usage of racist jokes by young republicans, I think it’s worth mentioning a recent book I wrote that might be useful for better understanding the historical and systemic roots of such humor

Imagine what Puerto Rico, Detroit, and Flint residents feel seeing a 40 billion dollar bailout of Argentina’s failed neoliberal experiment after the US imposed relentless austerity measures and blocked all fiscal autonomy. People lost their lives due to these measures.
