Christmas Fern (Polystichum acrostichoides) #fernspotted #ferns #piedmont

This close frond-view of a Christmas Fern captures a transitional moment for this new frond. Having already emerged from fiddlehead, this mid-green frond is gangly (not yet erect or straight) with still-curled leaflets covered in white/silver trichomes (fern hairs). The leaflets closer to the base seem to be further along than the tightly-wound leaflets at the tip of the frond and closest to the camera lense.

Northern Maidenhair Fern photo taken in the cooler, crisper days of May. Found in uncommon shade of an otherwise sunny river floodplain alongside Silvery Glade Fern. This delicate fern shows a horseshoe-shaped frond with delicate pinnae with light green leaflets extending outward.

Underside frond view of Spinulose Wood Fern found in a pine forest. This upright-growing, mid-green frond shows lines of sori evenly aligned parallel to each pinna rachis, extending to the tip of each pinna. Looking closely, the larger pinnules close to the rachis hold additional sori outside of the patterned lines just mentioned. It seems the sori on this frond are already spent, with spores already having been released.

Two Eastern cauliflower mushrooms growing from the exposed root system of a fallen oak in an upland oak forest. These mushrooms look much like marine coral. They are white with the appearance of a soft, even texture, even with countless branches.

Appalachian Polypody or Appalachian Rock Cap Fern (Polypodium appalachianum) #fernspotted #ferns #lithophyte #piedmont #spore

Very close view of the undersides of mid-green Appalachian Polypody leaflets. Bright yellow, with puffy sponge-like texture, the proportionally large sori of this specimen are comprised of sporangia that seem to have already released many/most spores. This plant was found in a large Appalachian Polypody cluster growing on a vertical, north-facing rock surface, located meters away from a coldwater river.

Nordic Moonwort Botrychium nordicum in lovely lycophyte-rich montane heath in Glen Shee. Frilly divisions, and a shorter stem than lunaria, and GB plants tend to have a lax fertile frond too.

Ebony Spleenwort (Asplenium platyneuron) #fernspotted #ferns #piedmont #spores

Very close view of the underside of mid-green leaflets on the fertile fronds of Ebony Spleenwort. Reproductive structures on these leaflets are oriented diagonally from the midline of the leaflet, extending upward and outward. The transluscent white coverings on the reproductive structures are indusia, though some are opening, fully opened, or have been completely shed. Tiny, dark, spherical sporangia are visible where the indusia have given way and are filled with ripening spores. This close perspective also shows a dark brown-red variant of the rachis.

Marginal Wood Fern (Dryopteris marginalis). #fernspotted #ferns #piedmont #spores

Very close look at the underside of mid-green leaflets of Marginal Wood Fern. Developing reproductive structures are located at the margins of the leaflets and capped/protected by off-white kidney shaped indusia (plural of indusium). The indusia cover sori, which are clusters of sporangia inside of which are countless developing spores. Each leaflet also demonstrates a leathery texture and, when looking this closely, networks of veins extending from the center to the distant edges of the leaflet.

A very close/macro shot of the underside of fertile frond leaflets of Christmas Fern. These backside of the leaflets recently shed the cream-colored indusium to expose the orange-yellow sori you see here. The sori are clusters of spores soon-to-be released on this fern.

Marsh Fern (Thelypteris palustris) is found in/near the Atlantic coastal plain in N. America, but is also found in other parts of the world. This #rhizomatous grower can be delicate and hard to spot early in the season, but developed fronds are composed of thick, textured pinnae. #fernfriday #ferns
