An immature Powerful Owl (Ninox strenua) peers down from high in a eucalypt tree at St Lucia, Brisbane. The bird has its back to the camera and shows the banding brown colour more reminiscent of an adult. Similarly, with the facial mask. However, the bird is clearly not yet mature as it shows it's brilliant white down in many places. Not least of which is around its large yellow talons.

An adult Masked Lapwing... A bird with a yellow beak and mask, black neck and head. The upper body is brown and underbelly white, with long legs.

A baby Lapwing... similar colours as the adult but looks fluffy. It scurries around on the ground as these birds nest on the ground. Always in danger from predatory cats or being run over by cars.

There was an explosion of feathers over my garden today as a Collared Sparrowhawk dove out of nowhere and tried to take a Brown Cuckoo-dove. The dove narrowly escaped, so the Sparrowhawk sat in a nearby tree to contemplate existence and stare at the weird human. #birds

we just published some new research! Gang-gang cockatoos love living in urban Canberra, but they are very fussy about the hollows they select as nests. Only a fraction of hollows are the right shape for these picky parrots! read about it here: academic.oup.com/jue/article/...

Rainbow bum. #birds

Photo of a Rainbow Lorikeet (a small parrot), ventral view as it grips a branch and faces downwards. It is brightly coloured in blue, orange, red, yellow, green, black, purple, and all the other colours too.

Same subject, but focused and cropped on the Lorikeets rump, showing a mind-boggling array of colours around its hidden cloaca. At this resolution its clear that the rainbow of colours goes all the way down to individual hairs of feathers, with same grading from orange to yellow to green to blue.

Scaly-breasted Lorikeet (Trichoglossus chlorolepidotus) in an African Violet tree at St Lucia, Brisbane, Australia. The bird has a vibrant orange-red beak that matches the flowers of the tree.
