Aww, Ana has another new friend! 🌿 How are we all feeling about Michael?

“Walk me home?” Ana asked, silently hoping he wouldn’t reject her request. “Of course,” Michael smiled warmly, “I’ll cook you up a nice trout dinner when we get there.”

“I’m sorry, I—” Ana stuttered an apology. “I don’t know what came over me.” Michael, bewildered by the rapid shift of emotions, approached her cautiously. “Ana, you didn’t do anything wrong.” The sound of her name, in the same tone he might use to speak to a frightened rabbit, instantly calmed her

Excitement at her first catch coursed through her. Before she could stop herself, Ana threw her arms around Michael, who nearly stumbled off the dock in surprise. Just as quickly—she didn’t even give him time to return the hug—Ana pulled away, immediately embarrassed.

Michael cheered her on as she pulled the trout from the water. Ana felt a rush of adrenaline as she held up the fish. It was well over a foot long! That was the perfect size for a nice trout dinner.

Just before Ana was ready to call it quits for the day, she felt a big tug on the line and jumped up. “I think I caught something!” she exclaimed. Michael was right by her side, encouraging her to reel in the line between the tugs of the fish.

They settled in, taking turns holding the pole. Fishing was a slow-paced activity, and they sat comfortably in long stretches of silence. The sun warmed their skin as it steadily rose higher in the sky.

Michael caught a couple of small fish, tossing them back into the lake gently. “Too small for dinner. Here, you try,” he said as he handed Ana the pole, “When you get a bite, start to reel the line in slowly.”

Michael showed her how to cast. She watched as he released the line with a practiced hand, the bobber sailing in a smooth arc. “Ignore the little dips, that’s just the fish having a nibble. Wait for a sharper movement,” he clarified. Ana studied him as he focused on reeling up the slack.

After clearing the air, the rest of their walk was more amicable. Michael talked animatedly about different bobbers and types of bait, and she found him easy to listen to. He clearly knew a lot about fishing, and Ana’s excitement rose as they approached the lake.

Ana sighed, “I guess that’s true. I just wish you hadn’t interrupted us right after your date.” “Date?” Michael was confused again. “Oh, Cecilia? We’re just friends.” He paused before adding, “I wasn’t thinking about how Kim would feel. I just wanted to spend more time with you.”

“Apologize? For what exactly?” Michael asked, confused. “I just think you hurt her feelings,” Ana replied. “Look, I like Kim, I’m just not interested in her romantically,” he explained, “I let her down as gently as I could. But it’s a small town, and she can’t expect to avoid me forever.”

The early hour kept the pair quiet as they walked. The Bramblewood was wild and tangled; Old New Henford was all open fields and wide spaces. Even the River Bagley felt more peaceful here, lazily drifting along its course. Ana abruptly broke the silence, “I think you should apologize to Kim.”

They met in the valley. Ana felt her cheeks start to burn as she remembered stopping in this exact spot last night, when they had stood so closely that she could feel heat radiating off of Michael’s body. She crossed her arms defensively, keeping her distance.

Sara had called Michael a flirt, which was true, but Ana thought there was something else in the way he looked at her. Maybe she was just being overly cautious. At least Ana would learn how to fish. She loved the abundant forage here, but it was hard to live off of mushrooms and raspberries.

From her perch on top of the hill she could see for miles. Looking out at the countryside, Ana instantly felt calmer, the picturesque view quieting her busy mind. She had almost enjoyed her time talking to Michael last night. And yet…she felt uncomfortable under his gaze, as if he saw too much.

Ana reluctantly woke at dawn, her head throbbing dully as she stepped into the sunlight. Images from the night before danced around her head: the crowded bar, Kim talking animatedly, walking home with Michael. Why had she agreed to meet him so early after a night at the pub? She rubbed her temples.

A new story update will be ready tomorrow! I'm excited to get back to Henford 💚🌿

They took two home but one had to wait at the gazebo for one of them to came back and a countdown started. I was legit hoping social service would take her but by the time it ended they reached the house with the other two and she just spawned at the living room 😭

They made a plan to walk to Old New Henford in the morning. Despite the late hour, Michael insisted they meet at dawn. He gave Ana one long, lingering look before disappearing down the hill. Back in her tent, the evening’s events swirled around in her mind before sleep quickly came to claim her.
