Periodic reminder: The integration of generative AI models into every sector of society is the installation of ideological and epistemic choke points, regardless of who made the model.
The spread of Chinese AI models with built-in censorship mechanisms could quietly shape the global information environment for the worse.
Not to alarm anyone. But, I, too, can tell if bodies are dead or alive.
I am going through Bram Stoker’s earliest notes on DRACULA today - they include a list of the powers and features of the Count (then named “Wampyr” before Stoker stumbled on “Dracula”), many of which are never elucidated in the book…
More ozone for us to breath, less ozone to protect us from the sun's radiation. Our glorious Future™. Maybe Sam Altman can ask the magic wish-granting machine OpenAI is making for breathable air and for the sun not to cook us.
How Elon Musk's dying satellites could hurt the ozone layer | BBC Science Focus Magazine
Particles released by decaying satellites could be causing an unwanted, harmful impact to the ozone layer.

OPINION: "[O]zone has two very different faces. High in the atmosphere, ozone is beneficial. Near the ground, it is a harmful air pollutant that can irritate the lungs and worsen respiratory diseases," Weizhi Deng, Jun Wang and Meng Zhou write.
This is a tragedy. The corporatization of universities has the US and the UK destroying their world-renowned higher educations systems.
I never thought that I would have to write this piece about my university. But after weeks of demonstrating privately to senior managers that their case is based on a false prospectus, that their data are inaccurate and their claims misleading, there was little choice. substack.com/@lucasamin/n...
I know the jokes in the Blacksky only posts are wild right now with this Roland Martin story.
Lately, I’ve been having a lot of conversations with people about how thinking of whiteness in binary terms (white or not) is preventing us from fully understanding the present moment. Whiteness has always had gradations and has always existed in a hierarchy.
Another datapoint for the fascist radicalisation of institutional pillars of much of the American Right
Welp, guess I have to find a different functional use case for "AI" when I'm trying to be generous.
AlphaFold was always bait-and-switch; now Google confirms it. A hyper-narrow bioinformatrics model with actual science bolted on whose guesses can be experimentally checked was never a licence for socially-applied slop at scale, but it's done its job. Effort transferred to LLMs.

I've been about this as I've been seeing the anger about book destruction. It's incredibly hard to find homes for old books. The get pulped or end up in landfills in staggering numbers. If they were destroying rare books, then that would be one thing.
literally these are books that would be pulped if not bought for 10 cents on the dollar. do rare books sometimes make it into there? yeah, if someone is careless, but that's *upstream* of what happens on sale, not *downstream*. you fundamentally are rescuing something from the fucking pulper.
The GOP scapegoating attacks on Dr. Fauci, a spectacle designed to affirm the conspiracy theories of a brain-wormed base, are chilling. What scientist or public servant, in their right minds, will choose to put themselves on the line during the next pandemic or crisis? www.cnn.com/2026/07/29/p...

They must be getting really nervous about the markets. Elon is doing interviews with people other than Joe Rogan, and Sam is out here making his trademark ridiculous promises.
You’re arguing about a well-written essay today instead of arguing whatever dumb thing the president did. You should be thanking Emily.
Okay. I have finally read the review. *stands up* Motion for Emily Wilson to review every movie.
Then it's time, right? If the singularity's here, get to preservin'. If the "singularity" isn't "here" enough for you to get pumped full of fluids and have your head lopped off, I don't wanna hear it. Mean what you say.

Me, now that faculty meetings are back in person.
Meanwhile, in Chicago:
It’s really something how people get up in arms about accessibility and equity when the thing in question is pervert glasses or Dark Clippy. I don’t see you folks showing up when Ticketmaster says there’s no way a wheelchair user can come to concerts or that sign language is “too distracting”.
I'm just going to have to start blocking people who repost that nasty white man with the filthy hands drinking the spoiled raw milk. I have seen it too many times today on my timeline, and it's disgusting, even to just scroll by.

Bernie hasn't tried this on here yet but here he is doing free marketing for OpenAI. He has been captured by the worst people in AI for a few years now and has been parroting company hype talking points instead of guarding against them. It’s like the public is being assaulted from all sides.
