A blog post brave enough to answer the question on everyone's lips: "what if the classic D&D ceiling monster (that's not the cloaker, lurker, or piercer) was actually a psychedelic nightmare squid that imprints its eggs in your subconscious?" traipse.hexarcana.com/2026/07/dark...

#osr rats, are micro hexcrawl settings/adventures worthwhile? Why? And if they are, what are some good examples?
My entry to last year's #AppxNJam, and winner of the 'spirit, themes and vibe of the Appendix N' category 😏. I really wrestled the title, early on it was actually a Conan tale set in a dried up ocean. beneath-foreign-planets.itch.io/low-tidings

blog post: a dubiously historical 2d6 combat maneuver system for #od&d, inspired by the "man-to-man" combat tables from Chainmail, and the Turn Undead ability! "What does my helmet do?" it stops you from getting smacked in the head. dungeondoll.blogspot.com/2026/06/od-c...

Played my first game of 5e today 😕. Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear! I was getting 3.5 flashbacks. The rules really do foster bad play culture, so much checking out. A real sense of danger and side-based initiative would have done wonders and that's just the start of it. Ouch!

A self mortification ritual I encourage everyone to undertake. I was permanently altered by the process. Perhaps, even, for the better!
Herein I read the monster manual entries from OD&D in order and try to parse them into groupings and categories that let me use them at the table. Every attempt to read OD&D is some sort of bizarre self mortification ritual. It's not the text itself, it's the grappling with it that's important.
