so this vaio can't boot to USB on its own, which makes sense since it predates that being A Thing. a common workaround is to use a CD bootloader called "plop", which handles booting to USB, but that was hanging turns out. if I insert one of sony's fuckass Memory Sticks™ into the slot. it fixes that
