And on the other side of the argument, there were folks like me who wanted to improve things by setting a good example, out and proud folks who thought furries were cool and refused to hide and were unapologetically enthusiastic about the robust creative space we had. They _hated_ that.

The biggest mistakes those folks made were trying to improve Furry by trying to kick people out of a fandom anyone could join, defining themselves by what they weren't, and trying to set themselves up as "one of the good ones" by putting everything they didn't want folks to see in the spotlight.

The Burned Furs were around in 1998. Heck, only a few years earlier That Guy Who Used To Be A Big Name wrote his unpopular "Six Shallow Graves" editorial in an attempt to "take back" 🙄 the fandom. This stuff was probably going on even before I joined in 1993. Same old story, only the names change.

A friendly reminder from everyone's favorite gay inflatable unicorn that it doesn't matter how much you tone it down when the folks who are complaining will never be satisfied unless you are eliminated entirely.

The world would be better if we all made and stayed friends easier, always had energy and patience to be kind, and remembered to check on one another. I think the biggest pain of grief is that there should have been more time and love and kindness.
