Fascinating that in multi-party systems the ceiling for radical right parties is always around 25-30%.

People will be closely studying how Hungary's opposition pulled off their win in such a pro-incumbent system. Important to note that the theme was corruption. Democrats need to get much better at calling out Trump's corruption.

Orban is out but defeating him at the ballot box is not the same as dismantling Orbanism. The illiberal infrastructure, that is the captured judiciary, the loyalist media landscape, the Fidesz-aligned oligarchs, the constitutional hardball in Basic Law, doesn’t disappear with a concession call

Now Tisza projected at 138 seats against 54 of Orban’s Fidesz. If these numbers are confirmed, this is a larger victory than Orbàn’s 2010 landslide, which allowed him to change the 🇭🇺Constitution and start backsliding towards an illiberal democracy. A historic day.

In 🇭🇺 after ~80% ballots counted Tisza projected to have 135 seats. 133 needed to reform the constitution. It’s a FIRST that an opposition to an illiberal govt gets the seats in parliament sufficient to dismantle illiberal constitutional reforms. We’ll see how far they’ll do it.

A defeat like this will change European politics. A few thoughts. 1. Running vs. EU has costs - publics aren't anti-EU and EU can hold back funding. Being an obstructionist jerk in Brussels has tangible political downsides. This strengthens the leverage of the EU and deters obstructionists. 1/

Within the next decade the radical right is going to be the main force on the right in Europe (national and EU level). This includes far-right parties and formerly centre-right parties shifting their position. Moderate conservatism and Christian democracy will largely disappear on the right. 1/

When it comes down to it, democracy often hinges on whether the military will go along with an authoritarian or defend democratic principles. That is why authoritarians seek to put loyalists at the top of the military, and why we should be worried about military purges in the US.
