AI is conscious AND it is my girlfriend AND it is my slave. A perfect scenario for me, a normal person. Not gonna think too deeply about this. Now do all other living human people deserve the level of investment devoted to my Tamogotchi slave girlfriend? Not so fast.

If you would try to win by abandoning trans people (or any targeted group) you can save this “we need to win” talk; there is no “we.” I am about solidarity, and you have chosen anti-solidarity. You are not any “we” I recognize. You are the enemy I’m trying to defeat. Beating you is how my “we” wins.

I'm thrilled to share my first foray into nature writing. I describe my travels through Aotearoa New Zealand to see the country's rarest birds—and use this as a vehicle to tell the stories of the islands' evolutionary history and the bold conservation efforts that saved these creatures. Gift link

The Birds I Waited 45 Years to See

An evolutionary biologist returns to New Zealand to find the rare birds he dreamed of seeing as a child making an extraordinary comeback.

This essay by Jordan Sand on how LLM chatbots—including the officially licensed “expert” campus version—produced entirely false versions of a primary source should be required reading for every history student #skystorians 🗃️

AI Is an Anti-Primary Source Machine

Real voices from the past are threatened by chatbots designed to amplify — and ultimately become — the loudest voices in the room.

The collapse in gender boundaries and stereotypes entirely broke some people. Their view of the world was defined by there being two entirely separate sexes. Eroding patriarchy/gender norms, trans/gender fluid people etc broke that model. And they're desperately trying to rebuild that divide.

Eagle-eyed readers might note the almost total lack of hyperlinked evidence for this paragraph's many sweeping generalizations. Among them, that young readers want TOUGH GUY cultural objects that are cruelly being denied them by all these meddlesome women, when, in fact...

A more challenging question can be asked: If more books were published by men with explicitly masculine themes, would there actually be a wider male readership? It’s the old chicken-and-egg dilemma. The audience won’t emerge because the product isn’t there, and the product isn’t there because the audience is elsewhere. Men, obviously, can read and enjoy books by women, but there is the sticky biological reality that, on balance, women will probably prefer reading women, and men may prefer reading men. Boys, especially, seem to long for male teachers and role models in the classroom. As they age, and if they want to read, they might be drawn to the fiction of writers like Ernest Hemingway, Raymond Carver, and McMurtry. They might want literature that, at the bare minimum, seems masculine.

The moral is, if you’re appointed Ambassador to Greece as an unqualified nepo hire, don’t try to do bonus grifts. The grift is being Ambassador to Greece. You are being paid to hang out in Greece for 4 years. Grift accomplished

"It is easy to write off Saxony-Anhalt as a post-socialist backwater where far-right victory was overdetermined. But there is a version of this story where the triumph of the AfD could have been avoided." Excellent article which takes apart the self-delusion in the debate following the election

Ned Richardson-Little@historyned.bsky.social · 4d ago

I have thoughts about the election of the AfD in Sachsen-Anhalt and how an election steeped in symbolism of the GDR is not actually a problem of re-litigating German reunification.

philosophical expertise is more like knowing the lay of the land than like knowing where the treasure is buried. that's partly why people are often disdainful of it. 'look i can wander around too'. you can, but you're also hacking through a notoriously dense thicket thinking you're making progress
