Crops are dying from the drought & these water guzzling monstrosities are allowed to go ahead ! Data more important than food !

Approval of east London datacentre labelled ‘slap in the face’ for local democracy. Datacentre prioritised over building affordable homes. Little attention to environmental issues. Govt overturning local council refusal is not devolution or democracy. Big business always wins.

French forces held a fierce defensive perimeter around Dunkirk and lost 18,000 souls. 40,000 became POWs. Without their resolve we wouldn’t have our nation’s story. It’s estimated 20-60k French resistance fighters died during the war. You’re only diminishing yourself with comments like this.

11:15am yesterday, our village. Are these the first migrants from Ceuta to reach Dorset? A number of young lads in Cub Scout uniforms leapt out of a minibus & invaded Jill’s shop. They had no idea what Apple Cobbler was and taunted Simple Sally with their woggles. Deport. Now.

#Thatcher destroyed social housing in the UK under the guise of right-to-buy. She used the poor as a vehicle to launder social housing into the hands of her private landlord friends. "Increasing home ownership" was just a crude marketing ploy to make privatisation of social housing palatable. Evil!

Thought For The Day largely seems to be "news has happened, here's a cackhanded simile about Gethulia from the Book of Maps and her throwing a stone at a cat and it turning into a holy crumpet". I prefer the ones where they just talk about a debate within their religion. At least it feels honest.

Humanists UK@humanists.uk · 2d ago

Rather than allowing humanists to contribute to Radio 4's Thought for the Day, the BBC's current format requires all speakers to frame political and current affairs commentary through a religious or scriptural lens. Yet half of the UK is non-religious so why not let us speak?

Yes! The French are just sighing and looking disdainfully across the channel at these populist brexity twats. They feel sorry for us. Forced into not-so-splendid isolation by a bunch of flag-waving losers.

Very obliging of #r4today to lead with Reform’s ‘plan’ to stop the boats using the Royal Navy, pretending it’ll be some great WWII-style escapade, rather than a hateful, costly, diplomatically incontinent mess. A total waste of everyone’s time as they’ll never be in power and it’s unworkable anyway.

We should never forget how the BBC has changed this country by giving endless airtime to Nigel Farage and other rightwing extremists, while shutting out progressive voices.

Nicolas Chinardet@zefrog.eu · 3d ago

And why is #r4today giving (yet again) such prominence to a hair-brained scheme that has little chance to ever be implemented? A GE is unlikely soon and the threat of Reform winning it is apparently receding. What is the justification for legitimising it?

It just keeps on coming… Farage struck deal to return as leader long before Sunak called surprise 2024 vote, so his claim that he wasn’t involved in politics when he got his £5million “gift” is, of course, another grubby lie. The man is garbage. Grifting, lying, cheating garbage. (Sunday Times)

Farage struck deal to return as leader long before election
Reform chief had insisted he was not involved in politics until Sunak called surprise 2024 vote

Extracts;

Nigel Farage struck a secret deal to return as Reform UK leader months before the general election.
Farage negotiated the pact with Richard Tice, then the leader, in March and April 2024. George Cottrell, the convicted fraudster who had been secretly bankrolling Farage, supervised the discussions.
Under the terms of the deal, Reform agreed to repay or write off more than £1 million in outstand ing loans it had taken from Tice's company upon Farage becoming leader.
The deal was first presented by Farage and Cottrell to the party's treasurer in mid-May. Its existence undermines the Reform leader's claim that he had no intention until June 2024 of returning to politics. Farage has used this to defend his failure to declare
donations made to him in the year before he was elected as an MP, which triggered two parliamentary investigations.
Last night, Reform sources
acknowledged the existence of the deal but insisted it had been drafted for if, not when, Farage became leader. Asked why he would have signed such an agreement if he had no intention of returning as leader, they said it kept his options open. They said Farage had assumed he would focus his energies on campaigning for Donald Trump in that year's US presidential election.
Farage has claimed repeatedly that he did not need to declare a £5 million gift from the crypto--billionaire Christopher Harborne or in-kind benefits from Cottrell, as he was a media personality at the time. MPs must declare any benefit in any way connected to their
"political activities" received in the 12 months before their election.
He told the "anti-woke" Trigger-nometry podcast last month: "At that period of my life, from 2021 to the third of June 2024, I was a broadcaster… I was somebody that promoted financial market products, I was an influencer, I wasn't in politics."
