NatureScot says the estate "doesn’t always appear to be compliant with Scotland’s access rights”. Perth & Kinross Council says “any blanket closure...would be unlawful”. Yet, the estate website says ‘avoid the hills and Munros on the north side of Glen Lyon behind Invervar’ from TODAY for 2 months.

A youthful (54 yo) Michelle was my companion today on my vanity project to prove to myself that I can still cycle more than 100 miles aged 60. Through Roslin, over the Granites to Innerleithen, down to St Mary’s Loch and Megget Reservoir, Tweedsmuir, Broughton, Biggar, Carnwath and home. Superb day.

They raked off our wildflower meadow, weeded the walkway, cut back the nettles and helped to willow spile areas suffering bank erosion. Thanks team @
Important analysis. Decisions about licensing more fossil fuel extraction in the North Sea are being sold as protecting jobs and economic prosperity. But new licences won’t do that. Providing jobs and retaining skills comes from accelerating the transition to renewable energy.

I last stayed in at Ben Dronaig at Christmas 1992 and last climbed Lurg Mhor and Bidean a’ Choire Sheasgaich at Christmas 1987. So it was good to get a night at the bothy again and to go back up those 2 very remote hills.
I first camped at Loch Doon in 1977, aged 11, at the area marked CA3 on the map (and a few times since). Took a wander down yesterday in light of the new camping byelaw proposed by @eastayrshire.bsky.social. The boundary shown in red and the 3 permit areas shown. Seems an excessive area to the west.
From Ayr this morning following the NCN 7 up over the Carrick hills then the wonderful hill road to Glen Trool through Nick of the Balloch, past the Highwayman memorial and the Shalloch summit back to Ayr. I’d forgotten how hilly these roads are. My wee ring got a full workout.

Redbraes extravaganza was in full swing today with teams out wading for invasives and rubbish, trimming back vegetation and litter picking, and surveying Riverfly. It's lovely to see the improvement in this invasives hotspot, only 5 giant hogweed found & only a few balsam!
The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service have issued a very high wildfire warning for several areas across Scotland from today until Thursday 13 August. Follow Scottish Outdoor Access Code advice and avoid outdoor fires when a wildfire danger assessment is in place. If you see a wildfire, call 999.

Here in Orkney (as I suspect other places) we had significant influx of European/agri funding for footpaths and basic infrastructure around turn of the millennium. That's mostly in desperate need of replacement now. Very sad to see.

There can be few better “wee” hills than Cioch na h-Oighe. It’s arguably not even a hill - more just the end of the ridge, but it’s a lovely slabby climb up and then two sets of pinnacles. I was first up here in 1980 aged 14 and many times since. I never tire of it.
My cycling times are usually evenings but today it was early morning before work and before the wind got up. Lovely it was too.

I was off @ramblersscotland.bsky.social last week but I could not but notice this sign and path (on Handa). European money for paths: gone. Farming payments for paths: suspended. Local council budgets: slashed. If we want outdoor infrastructure we need to invest in it, through a Scottish Paths Fund.
When we were both @shelterscotland.bsky.social, Tricia Marwick (later to be MSP and first woman Presiding Officer at the Parliament) and I worked a lot with Sandra on pictures of housing and homelessness 1994-98. It’s been wet a lot since Monday up here on the top of Scotland (especially today - Wednesday. Ugh). So time yesterday to go up from Kylesku on a boat and later over to magical Handa Island. And then into Arnaboll for a night.
Ben Stack today. The hill Robin Cook died on in 2005 (a year younger than me). It’s a lovely ridge and the mist was trying to clear….
I’m sitting on top of Sgurr an Fhidhleir which must easily rate as one of THE most stupendous dizzying spots in Scotland. I’ve spent two full days in a weekend in July on the many wonderful tops and sharp ridges of Ben Mor Coigach and I’ve seen not one other person.
