I think the shortest version of why LLMs are an anti education technology is that education is fundamentally about making shared context to understand ourselves, each other, and the world And by design LLMs destroy shared context

While China’s recent restrictions on rare earth exports sound scary, the truth is that rare earths are neither scarce nor irreplaceable. Drawing parallels to past resource “crises," our podcast of the week explores the broader cycles of resource dependency. With Pranay Kotasthane buff.ly/Y0qoJWn

There is soon going to be an historical primary-source black hole for the past thirty years of human existence... if it doesn't exist already, of course.
A different take from me back in 2023... (Not a perfect take, but something I've been thinking about a lot since I wrote these pretty high level / early thoughts) www.newreal.cc/magazine/roa...

🥶 Are we hurtling towards a quantum winter? 🥶 Had a great time chatting hype in quantum on @crackingquantum.bsky.social! We touched on: ❄️ Too little or too much hype in quantum? ❄️ Alternative 'norms' for science-entrepreneurs ❄️ 'Spinning out, better': equitably, democratically, and for the many
Now this was a really interesting discussion! @gemmamilne.bsky.social talks about how we hype quantum tech, how that can help build public interest and investment, but also about the potential dangers of hyping too much or in the wrong way youtu.be/pbYbLPxUy0c?...
Woohoo! SO excited my pal @gemmamilne.bsky.social will join us on the hype train, helping us kick-off the hype studies conference in Barcelona in September!
Keynote announcement 👨🎤 We're very happy to share that @gemmamilne.bsky.social and @christobuschek.net will be our guest speakers for the upcoming Hype Studies conference in Barcelona. Excited to have you onboard! Read more about Gemma and Christo here: hypestudies.org/news/hype-st...

Been thinking recently about a ‘turn to badness’ re the explicitness of immoral behaviour usually more ‘hidden’ in the cult(ure) of tech startups etc (think: VCs proudly & openly promoting defence investments) - looking for good readings on cynicism / explicit badness - anyone?
Nice opportunity ⬇️

Ok, time to dust off some Hannah Arendt, for absolutely no particular reason: "In totalitarian regimes, provocation, once only the speciality of the secret agent, becomes a method of dealing with his neighbor which everybody, willingly or unwillingly is forced to follow" (OT, ed. 2004, p. 556) 1/
📣 Wee bit of news 📣 (Not April Fools’ fodder…) Totally thrilled to have been given a Lectureship at the University of Glasgow, which I start today! I’ll be focusing on my research programme on the political economy of deep tech, based in @uofgasbs.bsky.social 🚀 I’m so excited to get started 🌱
In 2023, Scotland saw 1,172 drug related deaths (DRDs). Approaches to death prevention are complex as solutions require coordinated action across different sectors. How can we explore how causes of DRDs interact in our health and social care system? Let's use systems mapping!🧵 (1/17) #systemscience

Super interesting! Great to read about real-world examples of 'alternatives'; critique is limited without possible, material, copy-able, structures. (I was very flattered find out this morning that some of my words are quoted in the conclusion too!) 👏 @melissaterras.bsky.social
New paper, on how to build better tech for a better world: "The artificial intelligence cooperative: READ-COOP, Transkribus, and the benefits of shared community infrastructure for automated text recognition". A new history of building @transkribus.bsky.social, & coops can deliver responsible AI!
I'm not exaggerating when I say I've just sent this to every mum-pal I have in my Whatsapp - Hayley Nahman *so* eloquently captures the experience of reflecting (or not!) on the madness of birth/pregnancy/early motherhood: haleynahman.substack.com/p/200-hey-fr... Sharing for the mum-pals on here!

This is such a great film - congrats @bondhack.bsky.social @cynthiao.bsky.social @dangarrahan.bsky.social 👏 The way Windhorst squirms at so many points throughout is cracking viewing too..!
For years, I’ve written about the exploits of Lars Windhorst, a racy financier known for his extravagant lifestyle and history of legal troubles. Given all our stories exposing his murky dealings, you can imagine my surprise when he agreed to be interviewed to be on camera! youtu.be/8g9o7ISII6M?...
First ever MSc Science Communications cohort 😍 proud of every single one of them. A big shoutout to @gemmamilne.bsky.social for her amazing course on Science journalism @uofglasgow.bsky.social #uofglasgow
Hey @glasgowwestend.bsky.social 👋 (or anyone else who might be in the know) - we want to donate a load of baby/toddler toys before Christmas (heard it’s more useful than after..!) - any specific local charity shops / toy drives asking for toys? Don’t want to inundate where not needed / miss a call!
This is excellent! Such clarity and ambition, and awesome to see this properly explained in a Glasgow-specific news outlet (not ‘hidden’ in planning docs), so it gets the broader (but local) eyes and debate it deserves and needs!! Great work @garethdennis.bsky.social & @glasgowbell.bsky.social 👏👏
Did you know that after London, Glasgow has the best suburban rail network in the UK? But it's not without its issues. So today we’ve got rail expert @garethdennis.bsky.social to give us the good, bad, and ugly of the current system – and then redesign it. www.glasgowbell.co.uk/a-blueprint-...
