Quick proof of concept I made this week. I'm working up a project around textiles, women's work and anonymity - something about how old quilts, samplers and clothes feel a bit haunted. But also talismanic. And maybe a bit burdened, and definitely secretive.

I hast materialised in the Netherlands! First stop was to visit the pillar biters of St. Bavo's church in Haarlem, part of a much larger choir screen made in 1517. They supposedly represent hypocrisy, as the local proverb puts it: 'Who is a pillar-biter in church, shits devils in his own house'...

Here we encounter two curious figures carved in wood, grasping at the column that is part of the framework surrounding them and, with great gusto, literally sink their teeth into it, a gesture that distorts their faces and makes them look ugly to the extreme. On the right, we see a man in breeches and a short tunic, a mantled hood and again overshoes.The far left features a fashionable lady, wearing a long dress and a turban as well as overshoes.Pillar-biters symbolize excessive piety as well as hypocrisy. This could be explained in various ways. While pretending to be virtuous, pillar-biters forsake their charitable duties, or, while appearing devout to the utmost in church, their demeanour at home is quite different. Bild

Long story, but one room in our house contains a library installed by the previous owners, who left us all the books. It is no lie to assert that I discover something I've never seen before each time I go in. Today's treasure is this 1979 book of British folklore, how has this eluded me for 7years?

A few extra Solstice Battle prints have stayed home with me instead of going to the exhibition their brothers are to be included in at Garden of Tomorrow Festival. It's a special print to me and marks a personal solstice of sorts, a small voice whispering "don't try so hard, the wheel turns anyway"
