Wow. #Frontiers fights back with an opinion piece shouting "The fault is in the researchers, leave Frontiers alone!" And with the piece having no disclaimers of funding and donations, and apparently no editorial revision this opens the possibility of Frontiers paying for propaganda.

Although academic incentives are of course responsible for loads of weird and dodgy behaviour, no amount of incentive reform will stop the commercialisation of academic labour by the publishing industry. You can't say the 'junkification' of research is purely a problem of academic incentives.

Who would've thought cuts on food security (3500 FDA jobs, 9% Food Safety and Inspection Service jobs, cut on Safety programs, cut on 17 Inspector Generals, having the grifter Marty Makary as FDA comissioner, blocking a rule proposal aimed to reduce Salmonella in poultry) would have consequences.

In the last couple weeks, we've seen a remarkable number of food recalls due to salmonella contamination. So many, in fact, that it's worth our time to take a deeper look at some of the reasons why. 1/10

New paper in Nature. The more a government controls its domestic media, the more it dominates AI training data, the more pro-regime outputs we get from AI. By scraping the open web, LLMs are unwittingly laundering state-coordinated narratives into seemingly objective answers.

Thank you to @sciam.bsky.social for letting me dig into the protein enhancement fad. 1. If you are an elite athlete, OR elderly/frail, maybe you do need extra protein. 2. That's not you. You're not an elite athlete. 3. If it is you: consider yogurt. www.scientificamerican.com/article/prot...

Are protein-boosted foods and drinks actually more healthy?

Extra protein can be found in everything now, from potato chips to Pop-Tarts. Does this benefit the average eater?

At first I thought it was a sleeping bee, & it moved very quickly when I tried to touch it. But then it stopped moving again and I finally saw why. Such good camouflage, a white crab spider in a white pear blossom. 🌱 #inverts

A closeup view of 2 white pear blossom flowers, with a small native bee.Another view now that the bee has moved a bit, that shows the bee hanging from the jaws of a white crab spider. And a third view that finally shows the crab spider more clearly though it is still very hard to see against the shite flower. #gardening.

Now on @sciam.bsky.social: Scientists isolated a fungus—A. calidoustus—from NASA’s clean rooms where Mars-bound spacecraft are prepped. Then they tried and failed to kill it with conditions mimicking Mars and deep space. The implications... aren’t great. www.scientificamerican.com/article/coul...

Could this fungus live on Mars? Maybe it already does

An almost unkillable fungal strain isolated from NASA’s ultrasterile clean rooms hints at “critical gaps” in interplanetary quarantine

The most embarrassing moment of being a scientist of the 21st century is watching the tsunami of misinformation in nutrition, health and microbiome research while witnessing the actual expert scientists produce the most ridiculous excuses on why its not their job to correct such lies.
