Many people talk about the "Golden Age of Antibiotics", but I hadn't seen it visualized properly. Just how many types of antibiotics were discovered during that time? So, I visualized it myself!

A timeline titled "The Golden Age of Antibiotics" shows when each antibiotic drug class was first available for medical use, with example antibiotics labeled. Classes are color-coded by their source: actinomycetes, other bacteria, fungi, or synthetic. Milestones include the first antibiotics (arsphenamines in 1910), as well as the discovery of many actinomycetes-derived antibiotics, such as streptomycin, and sulfonamides, penicillins, and tetracyclines. At the first ever D&I conference, I argued that we needed more theory but less theories. I stand by that and worry that the profusion of theories, models and frameworks is hindering progress by creating too much noise! @gfontaine.bsky.social

When thinking about the pace of #DIScience24 , how do we deal with distractions of new frameworks and models and desire to quickly build new catapults and bridges? - @jhfordii.bsky.social Such a good question! It’s tempting to follow the newest “perfect” framework and restart all over again.
