More of Denver just reported (this is the 2nd batch), & Melat Kiros has grown her lead over Representative Diana DeGette from 2.5% to 4.5%. She is now leading 48.6% to 44.1% with 73% of the vote reporting. (Remember the first batch, with older voters, was expected to be the best for DeGette.)
A downballot result: In the highest-profile Democratic primary for Colorado's state Senate, the progressive side has easily prevailed. Chela Garcia Irlando, an environmental advocate, has won over Andrés Carrera, a former staffer for Governor Jared Polis.
In the bizarre GOP primary of the night: Trump endorsed a challenger to Rep. Jeff Hurd in Colorado's 3rd district, then he convinced the challenger he had recruited to drop out and he endorsed Hurd. Hurd has won.
Colorado's left also having a strong legislative night. Of 2 Dem state representatives facing a challenge from left, one trails; other is tied 50/50. In the highest-profile open state Senate seat, the progressive-backed candidate is crushing a former Jared Polis aide.
what we know so far in Colorado, 10:10pm: —Phil Weiser beats more centrist Michael Bennet for gov. —Sen. Hickenlooper holds off progressive challenger. —Voting rights champion Amanda Gonzalez wins Dems' SoS nod. —Left challengers up over Rep. DeGette, & at least 1 state Rep. —No call for GOP gov.
RESULT: In an upset, even if it was looking likelier in recent weeks, Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser has defeated Senator Michael Bennet for the Democratic primary for governor. Bennet has been the state's centrist senator since his 2008 win. He'll stay in the Senate (term ends in 2028).
RESULT: Amanda Gonzalez will be the Democratic nominee for secretary of state in Colorado (an open seat). Gonzalez is a longtime voting rights champion who has worked in election administration as well as in voting rights advocacy group.
RESULT: John Hickenlooper, the centrist Colorado Senator, wins his Democratic primary against the progressive state senator Julie Gonzales. But it's by no means a landslide, especially taking into account Hickenlooper's stature; he is up 57% to 43% with 70% reporting.
We already have roughly two-thirds of the ballots counted in Colorado's first congressional district. And we could be in for another earthquake congressional result: Melat Kiros, a democratic socialist challenger, is up 47.5% to 45% against Rep. Diana DeGette, a longtime incumbent, in Dem primary.
A result from New York today, one week after the primaries: Mo Brown has ousted Assemblymember Bill Magnarelli in the Democratic primary for a Syracuse-region legislative seat. www.localsyr.com/news/your-lo... Brown is a democratic socialist, adding to Left gains NY, and outside of NYC.
