20. Ecco the Dolphin: Defender of the Future (Dreamcast) Tim Follin's soundtrack creates an atmosphere that hasn't left my mind since I played it last year. The story is WILD (spoilers in ALT). (Inspired my dolphin Rho!) Conveyance is only major issue here. MUST use a guide and external map.

Man and dolphin live in harmony as equals. Aliens come and destroy the crystal protector of the earth, then steal the noble traits of dolphinkind--Compassion, Ambition, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Humility. The game unfolds in three chapters, the world changing as you retrieve these traits: 1. Without any noble traits, mankind enslaves dolphinkind and depletes the oceans of sea life, leaving man to fight the aliens in a stalemate. You unite three tribes of dolphins (based on their man-assigned tasks) so they can help you get to the weapon of mass destruction that is still armed from the war. 2. In returning Intelligence and Ambition to dolphins, reality changes to a world where a warmongering clan of dolphins rule the seas and have banished mankind from the oceans. You join a resistance and infiltrate the Clan's base to work your way up to their watery fortress in the sky to fight the Exalted Ones. 3. By retrieving Wisdom and Compassion, all is almost normal, but the alien queen has nested on Earth, guarding the trait of Humility. How do you deal with this? Burrow into her body and destroy her heart from the inside, of course! The final boss is the heart, and the entire chamber slowly fills with blood, functioning as a timer. Damaging the boss causes the heart to beat faster and harder. As someone with high blood pressure, it's most unsettling thing I've ever seen in a game, lol. (This game is insane. I find the world fascinating as hell, but getting lost in most levels drove me nuts, so I can't recommend it for playing. This is the kind of game that sorely needs a remake/remaster. Watch a playthrough if you're interested or play the game if you're a masochist.)
