Today we had the University of Edinburgh flying thermal, LiDAR and hyperspectral drones over our drought adaptation tree experiment. Really exciting to watch, and keen to see the high-resolution data! 🌳🧪

This week, tree, soil and weather measurements continued at our mixed-species EXPLORATION experimental site in Northumberland during an ongoing heatwave. A stark contrast to the rain two weeks ago! 🌳🧪

Yesterday (despite the miserable weather!) we installed a LICOR evapotranspiration sensor and a new anemometer on our eddy covariance system monitoring a young Sitka spruce stand. The data will allow us to compare the sensors in preparation for future forest research projects. 🌳🧪

Only nine conifer species make up almost all UK commercial forests. Sitka spruce accounts for over half of all timber harvested. To boost resilience to climate change, Forest Research and partners (Forestry and Land Scotland & Forestry England) planted 17 emerging species over 9 large trial sites.

In general I think it's hard to combat scientific misinformation when some of the best research is locked behind an academic paywall, while lots of nonsense gets published free for everyone to read in predatory journals.

After many years, I find myself playing again with loggers and sensors! 😁 This set will be part of a MSc experiment comparing water stress in mixed and monoculture stands of Scots pine and Silver birch.
