March 20th, I competed in the Sumo Science Championship – MCS edition, where experts face off in scientific challenges. My match? Astrophysics (Elisabetta Bissaldi, Politecnico of Bari) vs. Neuroscience (me, University of Bari). With 33 middle schoolers as our audience, Neuroscience won 23-10! 🎉 🧠🏆

🧩New study: "Network Constraints on 𝘪𝘯 𝘷𝘪𝘷𝘰 Synaptic Alterations in Schizophrenia" medrxiv.org/content/10.1... We map a prominent brain-wide pattern of synaptic defects in people with Schizophrenia using PET, then model the molecular, cellular & connectomic features shaping this pattern 🧵1/3👇

Our latest cross-species 🐭👨 work is out today ▶️ science.org/doi/10.1126/... We show that 1️⃣ Brain connectivity in carriers of genetic alterations conferring high risk for #autism & #schizophrenia U-turns (hyper▶️ hypo) during adolescence 2️⃣ This switch is driven by synaptic remodeling Thread 🧵👇 1/n

Synaptic-dependent developmental dysconnectivity in 22q11.2 deletion syndrome

Synaptic dysfunction underlies brain connectivity alterations in 22q11DS, a syndrome linked to neuropsychiatric disorders.

“There is no schizophrenia. There are schizophrenias." Researchers are discovering that schizophrenia, which can involve alterations in both the brain and the body—particularly in the immune system—doesn't look the same in everyone with the condition. My latest feature for @sciam.bsky.social:

Schizophrenia Is More Complex Than We Thought, Which Means New Avenues for Treatment

As a complex picture of schizophrenia emerges, so do new ways to treat the disorder

Honored to present "AI in Psychiatry" at the CNS Academy 2024 in Rome on Nov 27-28! This multidisciplinary neuroscience project organized by Lundbeck Italia SpA brought together experts and innovators in the field. It was fantastic to engage with such a multidisciplinary audience! www.cnsacademy.it
