Check out this new #OA paper led by @dannyszydlowski.bsky.social investigating the effect of heatwaves on chlorophyll in lakes!

Danny Szydlowski@dannyszydlowski.bsky.social · last yr.

The first paper from my PhD is now out in @aslo.org Limnology and Oceanography Letters! We used nine years of daily temp and chl data from Peter, Paul, and Tuesday Lakes to show that aquatic heatwaves increased surface chlorophyll concentrations during 24 out of 29 events. doi.org/10.1002/lol2...

A boat sits on the shore of the heavily forested Paul Lake. The water is still and the sky is completely clear with the sun beating down on the lake, reflecting off the water. The boat has two oars and is prepared for someone to hop in and go sample the lake.

🚨 Practical URGENT tip for NSF grantees: Out of an abundance of caution, I would right now go into Research.gov and… 1. Download your NSF award letters. 2. Print PDF your annual reports. 3. Screenshot the status table for annual reports. NSF is planning maintenance tomorrow to Research.gov

Due to maintenance, Research.gov (including access to NSF-PAR, GRFP, PES, and ETAP) will be unavailable from Fri., 4/25 at 10:00 PM ET to Sat., 4/26 at 1:00 PM ET. NSF apologizes for any inconvenience.

It is really bothering me (understatement) that the message is “bring back that one innocent guy” and not “WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK SHUT DOWN THIS WHOLE OPERATION IMMEDIATELY.”

Again, that Musk/DOGE penetrated this deep into the government this quickly is the most damning indictment of supposed American norms and guardrails imaginable. These are fuckin pirates; unelected, unappointed, unqualified marauders. A functional country would have laughed them out of the building.

Scoop: DOGE now controls how grant opportunities get posted across government. DOGE engineer removed users’ permissions to post to Grants-dot-gov without telling them. Now requests flow thru DOGE-controlled mailbox. with @carolynyjohnson.bsky.social + @hannahnatanson.bsky.social

1. Stop assuming people announce all their activism on social media. 2. Stop demanding people announce all their activism on social media. 3. Stop deriding people for not announcing all their activism on social media. 4. Dunking on people on social media isn't activism and isn't praxis.

Friends, I know you're excited to try protesting, but under no circumstances should you ever sign up to attend one. I'm suspicious of any org asking people to put their name on a list that is easily accessible via warrant or may even be public. You can just show up day of.

One important thing to understand about Wisconsin is that our local oligarchs (the Uehleins, Hendricks, and others) have been pouring money into state elections for years and this was a big loss for them too. Another important thing is that this election would have been critical even if...

Ugly crying that my civil liberties will be maintained (at the state level...) for the next 3 years. You all are excited about the decisive middle finger WI delivered to Musk and Trump. I'm excited that we have a fighting chance at abortion rights, affordable care, gun control, unionizing...

Susan Crawford ran directly against Elon Musk's millions & struck first electoral blow against Trump-Musk plan for oligarchy. Dems should replicate this in every race Progressives will now control WI Supreme Court through 2028 & can strike down 1849 abortion ban, Act 10, gerrymandered US House map

I sincerely think that universities should suspend their productivity standards for scientists and ask them instead to hold town halls in schools, public libraries, museums, shopping malls, and anywhere else and communicate what is being lost with the collapse of the research ecosystem.

James Sims@simsjames.bsky.social · last yr.

“The ecosystem of research and the creation of new knowledge in universities has been so powerful for American prosperity, American freedom, American ingenuity. To have that disrupted by government overreach is a disaster for this country.” —Wesleyan University President Michael Roth on @msnbc.com

Two of my grad students have recently received reviews on papers submitted to society journals. In both instances the reviews are exceptional-fair, critical, and with the intent to help us improve the paper. I'm thankful for the editors and reviewers that make our society journals excellent

Good to scream a little about all going on in our country, even in subzero F wind chills here in snow-covered Madison WI. Maybe a few in the halls of power will hear and act on how cruel, unAmerican, and doing nothing about “efficiency” this is all about. #FiftyFiftyOne

Honoring Elizabeth Peratrovich, Tlingit civil rights activist, today and her powerful words: "Asking you to give me equal rights implies that they are yours to give. Instead, I must demand that you stop trying to deny me the rights all people deserve."
