Thread of ways to help Spokane fire victims. As someone who grew up and also still has family living there, this is so heartbreaking. For those who want to or need help, check out the city's official resource list, which includes a handful of places for donations: my.spokanecity.org/news/release...
Community Resources Available to Those Impacted by Fires
Local organizations and services are ready to assist those impacted by fires.

this is really, really bad, and Spokane is ... not exactly on the national radar. I know there are infinite people and places that need help, and everyone's resources are finite, but some options if you are so inclined:

ANYWAY hey here's something more pleasant: a Baltimore architectural art piece. Available for purchase, $275 + shipping or free local delivery The backing is reclaimed matboard so the dimensions are a little janky; if it looks slightly crooked to you, that's why
I'm working on a wycinanki art piece of the Wilkens-Robins Building rn, if any Baltimore architecture appreciators want to call dibs on it in advance en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wilkens...
There is no version of yourself you could become that would satisfy the people who hate you. So you might as well be who you are.
While visiting, my kid & I brought my mom a hedgehog stuffed animal for her to take along when she has cancer surgery next week. She also has dementia & my sister, who is there now, said Mom has already forgotten who gave her the hedgehog (though she likes it a lot). I hate this situation so much.
Really great thread about how to vote in the poem category for the Hugo Awards, and below is the essential part. The Hugos are fan awards, so read the poems and vote for the one you liked the most - everyone is qualified! Poetry is for *you*, and you can like what you like, no questions asked.
Step 1: Read the nominated works. Step 2: Ask yourself, "Did I like this poem?" Step 3: Rank the poems on the ballot in order of how much you liked them. That's it. You don't need any special magick or training. Which did YOU like best?
Spent a bunch of time tonight listening to music - old and new, wherever the spirit moved me - and then working on a playlist for my brother's birthday. I forgot how good it is to do that. I don't know what I would do without music.
I work at a public library. People who want to use AI seem to have no trouble doing so. People who don't want to use AI have a harder time. I crowdsourced and then finalized this document "How to disable or avoid intrusive AI" and then gave it a short URL: notoai.org Please pass along if it's useful
My summer reading mystery box from @greenapplebooks.bsky.social selected by @charliejane.bsky.social arrived today! 🥳 I don't want to spoil the contents for anyone who is still waiting for theirs, but I'll say I'm super excited about all three books. This was a great idea - I hope you do it again!

keep thinking about the evil of this. It's not just destroying the physical books, bad as that is. They are trying to remove the underpinnings of knowledge, destroy all the accumulated wisdom - and silliness, and creativity, and whatever else humans have thought worthy of writing down.
No longer content with pillaging intellectual work and dismembering our environment (already critically weakened), AI companies are now hellbent on destroying books galore including rare editions. Shut down these nefarious enterprises already.
That sound you hear is every archivist and special collections and rare books librarians spontaneously combusting
I don’t want to be too sensationalist about this but also I’m the least violent person in the world and I think if someone said this to my face I’d hit them
Billie is a pillar of the book community and it sucks that so many people are finding themselves in similar situations right now. Please help if you can.

Suicide Basin is expected to fill to the top between Aug. 8 and 12, around the same time as last year, and a bit later than an initial estimate between Aug. 5 and 10. The timing is still subject to change.

The flood typically begins within a week after the basin is full, but it can happen at any time.
