Aberdeen sees sunshine for the first time in 21 days

Glimpse of sun after weeks of unrelenting rain marks end of longest sunless period in area since records began Aberdeen has finally had some sunshine for the first time in 21 days, marking the end of the longest sunless period in the area since Met Office records began in 1957. Residents of the Granite city in north-east Scotland glimpsed the sun late on Thursday afternoon with sunshine last recorded on 21 January. The Met Office said that 30 minutes was officially recorded in the Dyce area in the hour up to 4pm. It followed weeks of unrelenting rain in the region and throughout the UK in 2026. More than 277mm of rain fell on Aboyne in Aberdeenshire in January, about four times the monthly average, while the first 10 days of the year brought heavy snow to the north-east of Scotland. In only the first three days of this month, south-east England received nearly a third of its average February rainfall. The wintry weather is expected to continue with a yellow warning for snow and ice for most of Scotland and northern England in place until 12pm on Friday. The Met Office spokesperson Grahame Madge said an air mass called Arctic maritime air is bringing temperatures down. He said: “The snow and ice warnings that we’ve issued at the moment cover pretty much Scotland and northern parts of England. There may be some snow showers a little bit further south than that. “We’re not expecting any particularly impactful snow and the conditions will be quite brief before we get another system coming in from the Atlantic over the weekend, but for the next few days it will feel quite a bit different, as we’ve got colder air coming in.” BBC Scotland weather presenter Judith Ralston said: “With a change in weather type, we finally lose the stuck pattern of cloud, rain, and bitingly cold winds. “This finally breaks, allowing a northerly air mass to set in, bringing much drier, brighter conditions, sunshine on the way on Friday and Saturday and a few wintry showers on Friday.” Continue reading...

What a powerful, courageous message. “I said to myself that fighting against that on an individual level was also fighting for the collective. I said if I could do it, other people could too … My message of hope to all victims is never have shame.”

Asylum seekers, housed in hotels in Manchester, are reaching out in their own words to address the concerns of the local community. Please take a minute to read their letter, & share it with the people in your life who need to hear the truth about the people they are protesting.

What’s it like to be an asylum seeker inside a hotel where racist mobs chant for your removal outside? What will it take for the frightened children to recover from this & be able to feel safe & at home in this country. Which WILL BE their home. eastangliabylines.co.uk/immigration/...

More useless tinkering announced by the government today around the asylum system. No one in their right mind thinks this latest tedious rehash is going to turn the dial. We need radical change.

I have been so angry over Starmer's speech. As an emigrant myself, but also out of disgust at the horrible divisive language, and out of concern for immigrants in the UK. I must say it: this episode was, for me, a balm for the soul. It solves nothing, but there is a solidarity there I really value.

"I look at Starmer's trajectory and it is immensely difficult not to notice the trail of devastation left behind. Disabled people, Palestinians, trans people, and now immigrants. All I can see is someone who is willing to throw anyone out of his hot air balloon, just so it can rise higher."

And politically stupid, too. Alienates core vote (& they do have places to go) in pursuit of votes he'll rarely get, & demolishes his core policy agenda of growth, making his re-election more unlikely. Even those (inc. me) willing to cut him a lot of slack feel betrayed. A truly awful day for UK.

Hard to say how disappointing this morning‘s speech really was. Morally AND intellectually. Agree with every line here by @iandunt.bsky.social 👇

Mainstream radio presenters like Vanessa Feltz are perfectly happy to contribute, in their own small way, to the rise of the extreme far right. Her interview with me on LBC just now was chock full of lies. Calls herself a journalist. Really I wonder how they sleep at night.

Remembering my lovely mum on what would have been her 87th birthday but who was taken too soon by a life-changing stroke. She adored her children & her grandchildren - sad she has missed so many of their achievements & seeing the fabulous young adults they have become ❤️

My mum & her 2 grown-up daughters sitting on some steps in the sun in Rome in Spring 1994.

Sadly our gorgeous boy was found deceased in a neighbour's garden last night - he looked like he was asleep but had a gash on the back of his neck & we think some debris from that garden fell on him. We are 💔 & he leaves a huge cat shaped hole in our life. Run free over the 🌈 bridge Otis 🐈‍⬛

Otis 🐈‍⬛ is missing from the Drumoyne Avenue/Drive area of G51 - he's a friendly boy & likely familiar to anyone who passes through the lane between the 2 streets regularly. His fluffy tail is very distinctive. Last seen Friday 14th March. Any info welcome as he's hugely missed 💔
