“How many more summer days have to be stolen before we stop pretending this is natural? How many unprecedented disasters must be explained before the explanation is allowed to stick? How many times must scientists establish the same basic facts before we stop tiptoeing around the problem?”

We are given only a limited number of truly perfect summer days in our time on Earth. One of the more insidious cruelties of fossil fuel greed is how it slowly strips those days from us, more and more throughout our lifetimes, perhaps without us even realizing what we have lost.

My friends who grew up in India have told me that it has been boiling over there during the summer with massive heatwaves for their entire lives. People outside of Global North major centres have been yelling about this for a long time & have been ignored by Global North major centres until now.

Interesting how folks are freaking out about the climate crisis now just because it’s hitting big centres like NYC & TO. In the 00s I was in Shanghai. Heatwaves & shitty air daily. I didn’t see the sun once due heavy smog. I wore masks every day & went to the hospital for asthma. This isn’t new.

I want people to understand the full impact of the devastation that First Nations in Canada are facing. It's NOT just that people and wildlife are losing their homes...it's the history that is being lost for generations to come.

A photo of the wildfires in canada. Fire rages through forest area with vright orange flame and dark gray smoke.

Yesterday was a beautiful day. I biked to the park, had a lovely picnic with friends there, and then ran alongside the water for 8.5 km. The weather was perfect - 20-ish degrees, sunny. With worsening climate change, I felt anticipatory grief as I don’t know how many days like this I have left.

Summer used to be a source of sunshine and joy for me. These past few years summer has been a source of sunshine and climate anxiety. I’m trying to cope by living as sustainable of a lifestyle as I can & doing what is within my power to stop climate change as doomerism isn’t a solution, but urgh…

Summer is my favourite season. But in the last few years I’ve lost the ability to 100% enjoy it due to heatwaves & wildfire smoke. A 10k race I ran last year nearly got cancelled due to wildfire smoke. A music festival I was planning to go to a few years ago got cancelled due to that too. (thread)

What isn’t talked about as much while everything is literally on fire & extremely hot, is that a lot of pricy stuff that used to be luxuries are now necessities for everyone. Think air purifiers, ACs, N95 masks. And the people who cannot afford them will be the ones who suffer & die the most.

Why is CN Rail operating freight trains in the middle of areas with active wildfires? Are these trains transporting flammable or explosive cargo? “A spokesperson for [CN Rail] wrote back to confirm “that the crew was safely evacuated from the area,” but offered no other details”

‘We’re encased in flames’: Rail worker captures harrowing video as wildfire closes in on CN train

The scenes outside the window of the train are breathtaking. A wall of flame engulfs the treeline just feet away from tracks.

Latest Asian-Canadian drama: people are petitioning the federal government to designate February the official Chinese-Canadian heritage month & others are Big Mad that it clashes with Black history month. Do we need our own month? Is it because some folks are jealous Filipinx have their own month?

Tour de France stage 9 just got shortened due to extreme heat. Even if you don't care about cycling, this is worrisome and a sign that climate change is getting worse. Expect this to happen even more often in the future at sports competitions, outdoor festivals, outdoor markets, protests, etc.

This includes people who defend and enable abusers, with the full knowledge that the abusers are abusive. You are also not owed peace, forgiveness nor reconciliation. And you also deserve to burn in hell forever.

Nobody owes their abusers forgiveness, peace, nor reconciliation. Some things are just too terrible and too harmful to ever be forgiven or reconciled. Some people truly do deserve to rot in hell forever.

That’s why even if I’m still relatively young, I’m trying to make the most out of my life now. Because by the time I’ll be 55, even if I am still alive & will still live for decades, life will not be fun. No more outdoor music festivals, no more outdoor sports, etc because it’s too dangerously hot.

If you think the heatwaves now are bad (and they ARE already bad, with at least thousands killed by them just this year), wait until the heatwaves of 10 years from now. Stop driving and buying cars if you do not absolutely need to do it!
