The breakdown of the police/military distinction is one of those disasters--like the legislature controlling military spending, rather than the executive paying his own private army--that gets at an issue so fundamental to modern politics that the layman lacks the vocabulary to talk about it.

When you make anti-immigration policy cruel and dehumanizing enough, in future years it won't matter that we've gone back to welcoming immigrants. The memory of what we did will be there, and so will the risk that we may do it again.

This is the point--the putative advantage of first-past-the-post is that rather than the fascist party or the tankie party having 5% of power, it gets 0%, and the relative moderates get 100% instead of 95%. We are living in the failure mode.
Andy Craig@andycraig.bsky.social · 2w agoThe status quo allows a radicalized faction (such as Trump's hardcore base) to sweep one party's primaries and then get a toin coss chance at winning power, which he's won 2 out of 3 times. Even though he's never been popular, never had majority support. That's an electoral system design failure.
The settlements for his frivolous lawsuits are also bribes!
i don't believe anyone has "good-faith" concerns about trans women in sports in 2026. there's been too much time to hear the actual evidence, the actual people affected, and the role the debate plays in attempts to purge trans people from American life. anybody picking that side has made a choice

Trump was a kindergarden-level civics test the American electorate failed miserably, and the rest of the world now quite rightly regards us collectively as a toddler stumbling around with a Glock rather than an adult one can deal reasonably with.
Don't dogpile this person (I say, flattering myself that I could instigate such), but the loudest and most consistent policy position in GOP politics for well over a decade has been ethnic cleansing, explicitly and unabashedly, and the *farthest left* Republican is willing to tolerate that.

It's wild to me how many people do not understand this. "Luxury housing" is not some ontologically separate category from the rest of the housing market. Nor is "affordable housing." It's all one big fluid market & when you build more, everyone moves up & frees up the bottom end.

In the absence of new high end housing, wealthy people outbid the middle class for the best available existing housing and renovate it.

This tournament, unfortunately, has to go down as a failure for the US men. This game was the bar, and they were well short. Came out poorly and couldn't overcome multiple blunders. The feeling now will be, justifiably, "same old US." And there won't be a better opportunity than this for decades.
