I started watching Dark Shadows earlier this year. I'm almost 300 episodes in now (just before they switch to color!) and I can assure you all that Frid's performance as Barnabas is just as incredible as you've heard.

On this day in 1924, Jonathan Frid was born in Hamilton. After beginning his acting career on CBC, he rose to fame as Barnabas Collins on Dark Shadows. His portrayal of a sympathetic vampire trying to retain his humanity was a hit with viewers. He died in 2012.

A black-and-white scene from a classic TV series: a stern-faced man in a dark cape-like coat, white shirt, and striped tie stands in a dimly lit, gothic room. He holds a white rose in one gloved hand. Behind him, a large ornate mirror reflects his image, showing him adjusting his tie. The room features stone walls, a candle on a table, and a mysterious, dramatic atmosphere reminiscent of 1960s horror or supernatural television.
