Really need to get over my nasty tendency to stay up too late and operate on 5-6 hours of sleep. So much lost time from operating at a sleep deficit. I know it's bad, yet I do it anyway.. frustrating! It's always 'just one more page', and then it becomes a hundred.

I've never mentioned this publicly before, but I am on the asexual spectrum. Grey ace I suppose it's called. I don't really experience lust just by looking at things, and porn has never held even the slightest bit of sexual appeal to me, although some NSFW art appeals to me aesthetically.

Just learned that Chris Wickham passed away yesterday. He was a true giant of medieval history. Here's a pair of his books that I've read myself. They're wonderful and I recommend them if you're interested in the subject.

Dynamically personalized 'art' sounds nightmarish. I enjoy being challenged. It's a wondrous experience to have to read something a few times, sometimes over the span of years, for it to finally be able to click and be appreciated.

Playing Breath of the Wild for the first time since 2017 and I forgot how cool the foxes were in this game. Some games have really ugly foxes, like Skyrim, where they look like emaciated coyotes with mange.

A brilliant specialist history of the ideological backdrop of Spanish fascism.. also relevant to our times, if you dig into it. Highly recommended reading!

It seems clear to me that the Trump regime is a dictatorship.. although not necessarily a successful one. Successful right wing dictatorships are usually founded upon some level of economic stability, if not security, while we're facing a slow-motion collapse of living standards.

Second foray into Ethiopian cuisine.. I have to say, it was MUCH better than the place I visited last week. The moment I walked in the door, I could tell from the aromatic herbs and spices I could smell in the air that this was going to be good. (Submitted for @tanasimensis.bsky.social 's approval

It's not enough for my collaborators to use AI to write all their code. They're having it generate their presentations too. And that's not enough: they're even having it generate a script they can recite. What is the point of that? If you can't speak in your own words, have you learned anything?

Haven't actually finished this yet, but I've found it so compelling and chilling that I had to comment on it. Fiction about the atmosphere of terror and paranoia during the Soviet 30's is hardly unique, but Rybakov's depiction of it is unusually riveting.

Is social media and 140, then 280, then 300 character limits the reason why there seems to be absolutely zero nuance in how anyone expresses anything anymore? It's like every opinion needs to be binary and sound bite-able so you can get your point across before the other side just starts yelling.

People call furries weird, but it's hard to match the freak of someone who unironically declares themselves the passionate adherent of a political movement that went defunct over a century ago.

One of the most disappointing things you learn when you begin to study history is that seemingly more than nine out of ten people who say they like history aren't interested in it at all and are just armchair generals indulging a superficial fixation on spectacle.

I always find the most interesting historical monographs on niche, but vital subjects, and it will be published by Routledge and be $200. This is why I say digital books definitely have their place. I am not necessarily averse to spending $200 on a book, but it must better be thick and important!

In better foodie related posting.. Normally the isles(Britain and Ireland) aren't known for having great food, but early this year I had a truly good Scottish feast. Five course meal with copies amounts of beer and whiskey. Firstly, Cullen skink!
