Today is the 499th birthday of English mathematician, occultist, and court astronomer/advisor to Queen Elizabeth I, John Dee. Here's one of the wax seals (in the British Museum) used in the 'Enochian magic' practiced by Dee and Edward Kelley, through which they (allegedly) spoke with angels.

A circular disk made of wax, about 5 inches across in diameter and half an inch in thickness. It has an outer circle around its diameter, with inscribed writing between the edge and the circle, and then a heptagon inscribed within the circle with the points touching the circle. Again, writing is inscribed around the heptagon. Within this is a 7-pointed star, and within that is a hexagon, and withing the hexagon is a pentagram.

I remember the first time I saw "Jurassic Park" and how weird it felt when Neill's character got all emotional at real dinosaurs. Earlier he was threatening to slit a kid's throat with a raptor claw. He was the Main Guy Hero. Those don't show emotions! But he did, and it got me Thinking (C). RIP.

One of my old coping mechanisms whenever I felt slagged by a review or a shitty comment about my work was to go and read Amazon 1 star reviews of great works, and seeing the numbskullery lurking there, would always feel better.

Rewatched Beneath the Silver Lake and it's a lot sadder and moving than I remember. I liked it, even though Garfield isn't particularly convincing as a sleazebag.
