Today, August 4, 2026, is the setting of Ray Bradbury’s short story “There Will Come Soft Rains” about a fully automated house continuing on after the family who lived there and the world around it died in a nuclear blast.

A BILLION YEARS OF MISSING TIME The Great Unconformity at East Bluff, Devil's Lake, Wisconsin: 1.63 Ga Baraboo Quartzite overlain by a boulder breccia at the base of the sandstones of the Cambrian Sauk Sea (600-505 Ma). ⚒️

A female geologist has her hand on a low outcrop of quartzite, and that is overlain by ~2m of boulder breccia and then bedded sandstone. Annotated photo showing A female geologist has her hand on a low outcrop of quartzite, and that is overlain by ~2m of boulder breccia and then bedded sandstone.

I need to apologize to the posters who I thought were overreacting about the timing of bombings seeming to match market closes, now that we have evidence that they were actually doing that on purpose

The difference between Will Stancil and Kat Abughazaleh is that Kat used a bad faith quote tweet dunk on Will to solicit cash donations to her campaign consulting business and Will refuses to let anyone give him money to fix the slashed tires on the car he chased ICE agents around in.

Politics aside, do people believe city-run grocery stores with deeply discounted prices are a good POLICY idea? What are they intended to accomplish, in your view? What problem do they solve?
Would you implement them if not running for election? I'm sincerely curious in people's answers here.

One drum I keep beating is that the Trumpification of the Republican Party is irreversible. Even after he's gone it will be exclusively cranks, charlatans, and malevolent antisocial goons. "It was always like that"-it wasn't! It's gotten steadily, measurably worse, and he was the nail in the coffin

Don Moynihan@donmoyn.bsky.social · 6d ago

New, from me: It is fine to disagree with aspects of the pandemic response. But what we saw at Fauci's hearing was something different: a show trial where cranks tried to threaten and shift blame to an public servant. Here is why this is bad for all of us.🧵 donmoynihan.substack.com/p/watching-t...

The goal of the battle over the origins of COVID19 is “to sow distrust in science and scientists”. This article shows why experts believe that this was a spillover event and not a lab leak. The maps showing the cluster of the first cases around the wet market are old school Epidemiology. Solid.

Animal spillover? Lab leak? What the science says about the origins of COVID-19

The release of Dr. Anthony Fauci's pandemic diaries has rekindled the debate over the origins of SARS-CoV-2. Here's how scientists have weighed in.

if you reverse the aesthetics right wingers attach to strong/weak, the "strong men create good times / weak men create hard times" doesn't get the last thousand years or so of military history all that wrong

one of the oldest running dialogues in history is "war is a massively complicated political, bureaucratic, and logistical endeavor" vs. "fuck you pussy, war is when you're a fucking badass, oh shit I lost"

The reason Zohran scares the shit out of them so much is that they think this sort of technocrat FDR liberalism/market socialism will *work* and be popular, not that it will fail and be unpopular. They're afraid that he will be a good mayor not a bad mayor.

lowtax speedrun enjoyer@rickywlmsbong.bsky.social · 2w ago

zohran is a completely normal (mixed-market socialist/new-deal liberal/whatever) and it’s completely frying the brains of people with too much money or whose livelihoods are built on catering to the opinions of people with too much money
