The last paper from my postdoc research is out! We ran accelerated weathering experiments to simulate the generation of drainage from mine wastes, and evaluated how the changes in mineralogy through time affected the trends in solute mobilization. Check it out!
Evaluating links between microscale mineralogy and neutral rock drainage chemistry in mine waste materials
Quantitative automated mineralogical analysis is commonly used in mineral exploration, processing and increasingly in mine waste management. Yet, full…

Hey friends, Mammograms aren’t especially fun but they are really important and probably not as bad as you may fear. Did you know that in Ontario you can self-refer from the age of 40? And can get one younger if high risk? They are recommended every 2 years from age 50 to 74. Also, fuck cancer.
Breast cancer screening and prevention
Learn about when and how to get tested for breast cancer, and get tips to reduce your risk.

Critical minerals have moved to the forefront of countries’ energy, economic & national security agendas. Yet as risks continue to grow, stronger action is needed to ensure secure supply chains. More in our new Global Critical Minerals Outlook 2026 👉 iea.li/4yjUn4h
Also tempted to submit my concerns about the lack of bike lanes and the improvements needed. But I’m afraid the province will only use the number of reports and some easy stats - not the content of the concerns - to justify whatever anti-bike policy they want to implement #yycbike #yegbike
Oh look, the Alberta gov wants to hear our concerns about bike lanes. My concern is we don’t have enuf. @tomflood.bsky.social @brenttoderian.bsky.social www.alberta.ca/report-conce...
Why is this account labeled as anti-cyclist @labeler.bikesky.social ?
#YYCBike the Calgary Stampede in its yokel-brained wisdom has provided no bike racks at the MacDonald Ave entrance. The only bike "rack" is the fence and of course that's all full. If you try to lock up at any signs or benches, you'll be hassled by staff. So I'm not doing Stampede this year!

NRCan @natural-resources.canada.ca just opened a Request for Information to update the Canadian critical minerals strategy. I'm sharing some thoughts there, for sure.

We're going to look back at the "Critical Minerals" bullshit in like 5 years and go "what the hell was that about?" and I really do hope we get some answers.
Canada currently exports raw copper from BC mines overseas for processing, revealing a critical missing piece in our copper supply chain. Building a smelter on home soil would capture that value in Canada, creating supply chain resilience and reducing reliance on foreign processing.
The critical minerals story goes well beyond mining: It’s about competitive, inclusive value chains. It’s about First Nations’ rights, participation, and ownership. And it’s about developing and connecting major projects differently. 1/9
We’re proud to support FNMPC's new report, The Critical Minerals Value Chain: What First Nations in Canada Need to Know, a plain-language report intended to help First Nations leadership navigate the critical minerals value chain. Read the full report: https://ow.ly/PEJS50Z2N6E

⚒️ 🧪 A catastrophic earthquake just struck northern Venezuela. Large buildings have collapsed, and the USGS PAGER is forecasting thousands of fatalities. Our colleague in Caracas, Dr. Frank Audemard, has shared with us what the earthquake felt like and footage from the region. Here’s what we know.

🇨🇴🗳️The results are in, and it is what I was afraid of (by a very tight margin). I’m sad and genuinely concerned for the well-being and safety of people I love. There is a ray of light, though, seeing all the grassroots work done in the last month. Where there is love, there is hope
I looked with contempt when UK voted Brexit, USA elected Trump, Brazil Bolsonaro etc I was proud that in Colombia we were moving on the right direction: a peace agreement, a progressive government. But the ultra right wave arrived & the elections tomorrow might be the beginning of dark days 😞🇨🇴

Explain your @: My last name, Guatame, is very unique. I love minerals. If I could name a mineral after myself - which IMA doesn’t allow - it would be guatamite
Explain your @: It’s a portmanteau of geology + my nickname because I just really like rocks

This week my little brother graduated with a MArch and my sister with a PhD. I got my PhD some years ago. This is not a small thing for a family where mum did only primary school and dad got a technical diploma. Can't think of all that it took from them to take us here 💜 So proud of my cuchos 👵🧓

An analysis of 141 films since 1919 finds geologists are usually portrayed as likable characters, though nearly a third of on-screen geologists die, most often by murder or geological events. doi.org/hb3tq4
Geologists in films are the good guys... but they often die
It all began with a perfectly ordinary chat over coffee between four researchers. How many films featuring geologists can we think of?

Today I visited the Core Research Centre (CRC) from the Alberta Energy Regulator. I knew they had lots of cores, but this really blew my mind! And the best part: everything organised, documented and ACCESSIBLE! We might organise something here for the @igc2028canada.bsky.social ⚒️
