I think about this all the time. People get mad about bicyclists being on the sidewalk without ever considering *why* they are riding on the sidewalk. (And yes, of course bicyclists need to be respectful and safe when on the sidewalk.)

It's 4:00 on a long weekend Sunday, the spaghetti sauce has been on all afternoon, you forgot to get garlic bread. The grocery store is 5 minutes by bike, you have time to go for a wander, get the garlic bread, and assemble dinner, all without starting, driving, or parking a car.
