Maybe Kallianassa had a point. She did spend a nice evening. Despite his goofiness, his too-direct-compliments, the way he keeps pressing too much into her personal space for her liking, Georgios’s company didn’t suffocate her.

“And about after the match?”

“I suppose there are worse ways to spend one’s evening.” She digs her sandals into the layer of sand the wind brought onto the pavement. Georgios steals one last shrimp before crumbling the empty bag in his hand.

They sit for a moment, no sound in the darkness but the waves crashing gently against the beach

“So, same thing, next week? Match of the year aside?”

Sophia snorts. He needs to slow down.

“Now, don’t get ahead of yourself.”

He laughs, and she finds herself smiling at the sound.

“I’d never.”

Snippet: Sometimes, Isaiah and I’d pick a person—someone colourful, noticeable from way up here—and follow them ‘til we got bored. Those early days, I was still getting used to clambering high above streets like a spider. I’d cling to Isaiah’s wrist or his belt while he led me around. I think he brought me up here so he could clutch me close and splay his palm on my chest to calm my thundering heart. He was different back in those days. Stupid-tall, but not grown into it yet, all lanky limbs and awkward gait. He was already dyeing his hair black but had it cut in some abysmal, shaggy fringe. No tattoos, too much eyeliner, shitty cheap piercings. I could still sometimes make him blush. I curl over myself. I dig my fingers into grooves in the ventilation shafts and bend completely in half. My hair hangs over the drop. A kaleidoscope of neons flutters through the choppy strands. If I could just. Be that person again. Be a person again.

The Pitch
Anarchocommunist, OCD-ridden Posey Peabody has been drafted into the American Army Academy for Powerful Witches. By entry stats she's the Winner--First Rank of her class. All is well as can be until Amelia Appleton takes her Rank with reckless, dangerous, wrong magic. And then Appleton doesn't get expelled.
Competitive streak activated, Posey and Appleton engage in reckless, rule-breaking acts of magic and mischief. While trading First Rank between each other, Posey realizes that Appleton might not be such a weirdo after all. In fact, she's annoyingly pretty. That said, Appleton's got her eye on that government position through all this, and Posey would rather die than work for the fascists in charge. Posey's intention is to truly get expelled. She wants to be the first one to do it.
Meanwhile, an underground betting ring rises up, classmates betting on whether or not Posey will have to kill someone to get expelled. Posey hopes it's not true, but whether or not she finds out is entirely up to her.

Drifting through the rest of the day in this half-there state, I sit with my feelings locked tight in a jar of my own design. Ґ1l preserve my emotions like lemons, until they're laden with salt and mellowed in their sourness. That feeling, or lack thereof, feels warm as home to me, and my deep yearning for Nukeville ebbs into a soft ache that gently rubs my heart into a smoother, steadier rhythm. There will be no need for counting when there's no feeling to (dis)regulate.

The young woman spoke with such bright reverence as if life was a fairy tale and magic was all they needed for a happy ending. It was as if she couldn’t see the shadows approaching her. The inevitable death.
“Magic should never return.”
After speaking those words, he sprang forward and shoved her away from the shadows. Pain rocked him as soon as he touched her. The scorching mystical agony tore a scream out of him, but it kept her away from the unearthly menace, and the shock did what he intended.
