Text excerpt from NOMARA, a science fiction WIP by L.L. Stephens. Snip shows Kate not enjoying her first encounter with the nomari.

“Katharine.” Oandah’s voice punctured the red haze. “You are injured. Do not move too much.”
“Where—"
“You are on a litter. Be still and be glad that you can rest while others walk.”
Kate felt it now, the rough swaying of her body, the irregular motion. She was being carried. Testing her arms, she discovered her wrists lashed to the poles of the litter. After a while, feeling stronger, she opened her eyes again, turned her head only enough to look over the edge of her conveyance. Oandah walked there, head bowed. She wore her cloak again, hood covering her hair.
“What happened?”
“You failed. They struck you, almost too hard, but you will recover. Your vehicle they destroyed. I do not think it will function now to get you off from here.”
“But the Alameda,” Kate protested weakly. “The ship will find it.” She would have said more, but her jaw ached horribly, and speaking seemed hardly worth the effort.
“Perhaps. They will not find much but its carcass. What they find will convince them you are dead.”

The woman watched silently from the same tent. Barus undressed and poured water over his head, wishing it was colder, the wound in his hand finally healed. Scissors from his carrier undid the stitches. Green, also naked, used the camp’s water jugs, washing himself of sweat and the slaver’s blood.
Sitting on a crate, Barus clipped off nails caked in dirt, his gaze fixed on a stiff hand behind the rover, scowling from what he did, “I’m worried about her.”
Pulling up a fresh sock to his shin, Green sighed, still tired from last night, “Give her some time. It won’t be easy talkin’…around this.”

The sailor led Daryl to the gunwale and he could see more clearly the large naval ship alongside. The sailor made a gesture and a line was lowered with a harness on the end. The sailor fitted the harness to Daryl, saying, “To keep you safe going up the ladder.”
With the harness fastened, the sailor said, “You go up first.”
Daryl hesitated and the sailor said, “Don't worry, I won't look up.”
Daryl looked down at the evening gown he was wearing and said, “That would probably be best.”
Once he was on deck he saw a figure in a tuxedo. Brodie. Daryl ran to him and they hugged. Then Daryl stood back a little and struck a light blow on Brodie’s chest. “Why'd you tell him I'm a girl?”
“Why didn't you tell him you weren't?”
“He'd have made me walk the plank.”
“Before. In the car.”
“I thought you must have had some reason.”

Alexandra's time in the Mantis Court was still a complete mystery to most, and until she chose to share it, she intended to keep it that way.
"More than you could imagine. But we've just arrived from Avon's Rest and need to find a safe chamber for Princess Alexandra. You've heard about the flames of Kalenth by now, I would hope."
"Aye, scary business. Could see the smoke from here." Liora crossed her arms, nodding along. "The messenger arrived only a day before. Must be exhausted, you girls."

Once the whole mess was brought to a boil Kimmy sent her power coursing into the cavitation bubbles to diffuse throughout the liquid and turn it from something that would shred your insides when you drank it to something that would, hopefully, counteract Void.

She gazed out across the wide expanse of flowing water. What mysteries lay on the other side of the Kalim? Was it truly something so terrible?

Elijwa looked to the new stars in the night sky. There had been no further messages or dreams [REDACTED]. She wondered if that is what they had been or if they were simply wishful ruminations.

"And I ran away."
Ross gently touched her shoulder, it felt as if she was covered in pins and needles."That is good, I'm happy you did that. Okay ? Are you still with me ?" he asked, definitely noticing how the attention had overloaded her after all what happened today. "Yes .." Vela whispered, and shoved his hand away firmly, that was too much right now. "Our ship definitely has no displacer. Displacers are huge subsystems, much larger than our whole ship, only the biggest ships have these, like supercarriers." Ross laid it out so clearly. Vela never cared about that military stuff. The realization hung in the deck like a looming cloud. Vela felt a deep sting in her stomach. Was she stupid for even going out there ?

“Unit of measurement, don’t worry about it,” Cook says as he slides a glass of orange juice towards me.
“Fair enough.” I eat breakfast in silence, savouring each bite. It’s exactly what I needed.
“Lunch isn’t for a few more hours, so if you’re not looking to interrupt the class, are you going to try out the thing from yesterday again?”
“No. I feel uneasy about something. Going to check out the treeline for a bit. Everything is still closed up tight, right?” I ask.
“Oh yes! I can open this back door right here, but nothing else. You good to go out alone?” His voice carries a lot of concern for my safety.
“I think so, with these new guns of mine,” I say, and I have to fight so hard not to laugh at his frown, and again when his expression changes to irritation when I hold up my arms and flex my fingers.
“Don’t get too cocky just yet,” he continues gruffly, “you’re only just scratching the surface of what a Draakkin can do!”
“Alright dad, but I still have to check the treeline for anything I find either suspicious or troubling, cause that’s my job,” I say with a smile and walk towards the back door. He unlocks and holds it open for me.

Emboldened, I pull out the box from the wardrobe, the one that holds the other Journals, Diaries, and photographs.
I pick the one on top and fan through the pages awkwardly. Her handwriting looks so much like mine it's freaking me out, knowing I did not write it. I wonder what a graphologist would have to say if they compared the two?
