When most wine-drinkers think of Argentina, they think of Mendoza. And while there are good reasons for that, most of my favorite ARG wines are from the N. province of Salta, which has a desert climate Probably the crown jewel of the province is the Colomé winery (Excuse typos, I was on the phone)

There’s a winery in Salta, a northern province of Argentina, called Colomé, that produces a wine called Altura Maxima which is produced from grapes grown at slightly over 3.000 m.a.s.l. The winery itself (with most of its fields) is at 2.300 meters We made it to the winery but not to Alt Max

Yeah. Here in Chile for months at a time we were only allowed to leave our homes twice a week. To do so we had to log online to get a pass that was valid for 4 hours at a time IIRC You could walk your dog whenever you wanted So, American friends you guys really have no idea what a lockdown is like

People still complain about “lockdowns” but we had none in the US. We had stay-at-home orders, where although businesses were closed, you could still go outside whenever you wanted. Other countries had far stricter rules, and yet have been much more accepting of them as they saved many more lives.

World Cup breakout star Vozinha was given a hero’s welcome here in Santiago just now I have to say I’m amazed he signed with Colo Colo, which is our most popular club, but surely he could have received more money elsewhere? All the news outlets had breathless live coverage of his arrival

Just by chance I connected with @guerrieroc.bsky.social here, not realizing that a) he lives in Santiago and b) he and his wife own the only wine shop in the city that works exclusively with small Chilean producers: La Cava del Barrio. A magnificent place, highly recommended.

We have a palta tree (palta = Chilean for avocado) in our yard. Over the last 10 yrs it has produced a scant handfull of fruits, nothing edible This yr the tree burst into fruit. Last week a few started to fall from the tree with the wind We just got hit with a major rainstorm. This morning: 1/2

Speaking of Iggy Pop, one of my favorite wine labels is from an orange wine, made from a blend of 4 white grapes by a project here called L'Entremetteuse The winemaker behind this blend is French; she has a sense of humor (hence the wine name) & she's a punk rock fan (hence Iggy & the Stooges)

Yeah, if you're an English speaker, you'll get the joke. Very few of our Chilean clients get the joke and I don't usually try to explain it, either. If you know, you know, right? But the label is an illustration of Iggy Pop and his three stooges, where Iggy has his arm around two of his band mates (while the 4th member is looking from over his shoulder). Iggy is wearing a leather jacket but he's barechested, where the 4 grapes used in this blend are identified: Rousanne, Viognier, Semillion and Marsanne Above Iggy's head in orange-yellow letters is the name of the wine, "Four Skins", and underneath that in smaller letters we have the name of the winery, L'Entremetteuse, the identification of the valley (Colchagua). This is Vol 5 from 2022 Every year we get a different punk group on the label; I'll have to find pictures of the previous vintages
