First event I read as it happened in the US comics, thanks to discovering the comics shop in town. Felt like being able to read a myth as it formed. And in many ways I’ve always been looking for another cover which goes as hard as one of my first:

The X-Man Wolverine, his costume torn to shreds and his adamantium claws out, faces just to the left of the reader, ready to fight an unseen opponent Behind him, against a black background, are huge streaks of blood. A caption promised WOLVERINE vs. SABRETOOTH - - ROUND 1! No cover has ever gone harder than this.

#EventsDearBoy 3. MUTANT MASSACRE (1986, Marvel) Apparently one of Jonathan Hickman's ideas when he revamped the X-Men was 'give them some wins'. Wherever could the idea that the X-Men are constantly losing have come from, I wonder? Perhaps this first mutant event will shed some light!

Absolutely lapped this up at the time, spent a chunk of student budget on every issue of every mini-series. Also, the Wolverine cliffhanger that led into this was a banger: Wolvie, fist under Sabertooth’s head, two claws extended either side… and the world went crystal.

Miss Davies at Caldicot Comp. First year of GCSE I had a teacher who took against me - literally the only time I didn’t get straight As, went down a whole two grades. She replaced the other teacher and actually built my confidence and love of the subject back up. Hope she’s done magnificently since

A quite wonderful and articulate paean to a particular type of Doctor Who that perhaps goes undersung because there’s less glory in saying how good it is. And a *magnificent* choice for no 1.

And Tom Chadbon gone, one of the best things about one of the best Doctor Who stories. "That's a spaceship!" Interviewed him way back when and was lucky enough to have him in one of my audios playing a dotty time scientist. Lovely fella and did good work.

Bill Oddie, what a lovely bloke. He wrote us a letter when we started making The Young Ones, wishing us the very best, and warning us against interference from higher up. He didn’t know anyone in the cast personally. It just came out of the blue. Lovely thing to do.

Amusing that Strange New Worlds drops its most unsubtle reference to Doctor Who yet in a story that flatly contradicts at least three Doctor Who stories. It's almost as if they understand how Doctor Who continuity works.

I absolutely loved Keegan the manager, but do yourself a favour and watch some YouTube footage of him as a player, particularly at Liverpool. They try to kick lumps off him, they knock him to the floor, he just keeps on bouncing back up again. He was irrepressible.
